SOFTBALL OPENS SERIES WITH 2-0 WIN AT SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT STATE

New Haven, Conn. – Sophomore righty Lauren Nichols (Syracuse, N.Y./Solvay) tossed a two-hitter to lead the Le Moyne College softball team to a 2-0 win over Southern Connecticut State University in the first game of a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Pelz Field. The second game of the day was suspended by darkness in the top of the ninth tied at 0-0. The game will resume on Sunday at 10:00 a.m.

The Dolphins scored the only run they would need in the first inning. Junior catcher Ally Nicolosi (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn) singled up the middle to start the frame and moved to second on a single down the left field line by freshman center fielder Aubrie Williams (Kirkville, N.Y./East Syracuse-Minoa). After moving to third on a dropped fly ball by the second baseman, Nicolosi scored on a sacrifice fly to center by redshirt junior third baseman Chelsie Delperuto (Syracuse, N.Y./Solvay/UMBC).

The Dolphins took advantage of another error by the Owls in the seventh to add an insurance run. Junior second baseman Jillian McManus (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) led off with a single through the left side. Following a pair of outs, McManus scored from second on a throwing error by the third baseman.

Nichols faced just three batters over the minimum in the complete-game performance, while striking out three in her seventh win of the season. Jazmyn Martinez was the tough-luck loser for the Owls after yielding two unearned runs over seven innings, while also posting three strikeouts.

Le Moyne (15-12, 7-3 NE10, 5-1 SW) and the Owls complete the suspended game on Sunday morning and then play the series finale afterward.
