BASEBALL COMPLETES SERIES SWEEP OF NEW HAVEN WITH 8-3 VICTORY

West Haven, Conn. – Sophomore southpaw Joe Vail (Cromwell, Conn./Xavier) struck out a career-high 10 batters to lead the Le Moyne College baseball team to an 8-3 win over the University of New Haven on Tuesday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action at Frank Vieira Field.

The Dolphins opened the game's scoring with a run in the first inning. Redshirt sophomore second baseman Brian O'Mara (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) led off with a double down the left field. After a pair of outs, redshirt senior first baseman Andrew Taft (Clinton, N.Y./Clinton/Buffalo) doubled to left field to drive in freshman pinch-hitter/second baseman Drew Carroll (Clifton Park, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy (Albany)).

Le Moyne doubled its lead in the second inning. Sophomore right fielder Michael Smith (Montebello, N.Y./Suffern) and junior third baseman Nicholas Jacques (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Shenendehowa) opened the frame with singles and then junior center fielder Justin Tuey (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) walked to load the bases. Smith then scored on a balk.

The Dolphins blew the game open with five runs in the third. After senior catcher Camillo Spinoso (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy/George Washington) walked to start the inning, he came around to score as Taft doubled to right center. Senior designated hitter Nick Place (Towanda, Pa./Towanda) then reached second on a throwing error by the third baseman, which allowed Taft to score. Following an out and a single to right by Jacques, Tuey singled up the middle to drive in Place. After an out and steals by Jacques and Tuey, Carroll singled to center to plate Jacques and Tuey.

New Haven got on the scoreboard with a run in the bottom of the third. Catcher George Pappas walked and Chiaro was hit by a pitch to open the inning. After a strikeout, Pappas scored from second on a throwing error by the shortstop.

Le Moyne completed its scoring with a run in the sixth. Carroll led off with a single up the middle, moved to second on a groundout and came around to score on a single down the left field line by Spinoso.

The Chargers plated a pair of runs in the eighth. Second baseman/third baseman James Myers led off with a single up the middle and took second on a wild pitch. Following a single by center fielder Matt Chamberlain to put runners on the corners, first baseman Andrew Garcia lifted a sacrifice fly to right to drive in Myers. After he stole second, Chamberlain scored on a single to right center by second baseman Hunter Boag.

Vail tossed seven innings en route to his 10 strikeouts to earn his first win of the season, while yielding just an unearned run and one hit. Carroll, Taft, Smith and Jacques each had two hits in the game. Izaiya Mastre took the loss after allowing seven runs (four earned) over five innings, while striking out three.
