Albany, N.Y. – Junior third baseman
Nicholas Jacques (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Shenendehowa) had three hits and scored two runs to lead the Le Moyne College baseball team to an 11-8 win over The College of Saint Rose in Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division action on Wednesday afternoon at Bob Bellizzi Field.
The Dolphins opened the game's scoring with three runs in the second inning. Senior designated hitter
Nick Place (Towanda, Pa./Towanda) was hit by a pitch with one out and sophomore right fielder
Michael Smith (Montebello, N.Y./Suffern) followed by drawing a walk. Jacques then doubled to right to drive in Place. Following a groundout, freshman second baseman
Drew Carroll (Clifton Park, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy (Albany)) singled to center to knock in Smith and Jacques.
Le Moyne extended its lead to 8-0 with five runs in the third inning. Senior catcher
Camillo Spinoso (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy (Syracuse))/George Washington) led off with a single to third base, redshirt senior first baseman
Andrew Taft (Clinton, N.Y./Clinton/Buffalo) followed with a single to right and then Place walked to load the base. Smith then singled to left to drive in Spinoso. Following an out, junior center fielder
Justin Tuey (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) walked to force in Taft. After a groundout, senior left fielder
David DiNorcia (Naples, Fla./Seacrest Country Day) tripled to center to drive in Smith, Tuey and Carroll.
Saint Rose got two of the runs back in the bottom of the third. Left fielder Kenny Fils-Aime doubled to center with one out and moved to third on a single to left by right fielder Stephan MacMeans. First baseman Nicolas Teitter then doubled to center to knock in Fils-Aime. MacMeans then scored on a groundout by catcher Jon Montesanti.
The Golden Knights pulled within 8-5 with three runs in the fifth inning. Teitter led off with a double to left, Montesanti walked and second baseman/shortstop Andrew Pedone singled to left to load the bases. After an out, designated hitter Jack McDonald doubled down the right field line to drive in all three baserunners.
Le Moyne pushed its lead to 9-5 in the eighth inning. Freshman shortstop
Nick Nevins (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) led off with a single to center, moved to second on a groundout and came around to score on a two-out single to center by Place.
Saint Rose answered with a run in the bottom of the frame. Third baseman Tyler Osborne led off with a single to left. After a pitching change and a foul out, Fils-Aime singled to the shortstop, while Osborne advanced to third on a throwing error by the shortstop. Following a pop out, Teitter reached on a fielding error by the third baseman, which allowed Osborne to score.
The Dolphins added two insurance runs in the ninth. Jacques walked to start the frame and advanced to third on a single to right by Tuey, who then stole second base. Carroll followed with a single to left to plate Jacques and Tuey.
The Golden Knights scored twice in the ninth and brought the tying run to the plate, but could not cut further into their deficit. Pedone led off with a single to center and then center fielder Alexander Koshgarian walked on four pitches. McDonald then doubled to right to drive in Pedone. After a lineout, second baseman Patrick LaDouce singled to left to plate Koshgarian. The next two hitters were retired to end the game.
Freshman
Michael Chiarito (Monroe, N.Y./John S. Burke Catholic) earned his first collegiate victory after tossing two and two-thirds innings out of the bullpen, while yielding just an unearned run and one hit. In addition to the three-hit performance by Jacques, DiNorcia, Place and Carroll each had two hits. Cameron Flynn suffered the loss after allowing three runs and three hits over one and two-thirds innings.
Le Moyne (19-19, 10-8 NE10, SW) returns to action on Saturday at American International College for a doubleheader beginnings at 12:00 p.m.
