SECOND-RANKED MEN’S LACROSSE CRUISES TO 14-4 WIN OVER EIGHTH-RANKED MERCY IN NCAA QUARTERFINALS

Syracuse, N.Y. – Junior attackman Matt Hutchings (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) scored three goals in the first quarter to lead the second-ranked and top-seeded Le Moyne College men's lacrosse team to a 14-4 win over the eighth-ranked and fourth-seeded Mercy College in the NCAA Championship quarterfinals on Saturday afternoon at Ted Grant Field.

With the victory, the Dolphins advance to the NCAA semifinals for the 14th time in 18 years and will host seventh-ranked and sixth-seeded Merrimack College on Saturday, May 18 at 12:00 p.m. The Dolphins and Warriors will meet in the semifinals for the third time in five years (2015, 2016 and 2019) and in the NCAA Championships for the fourth time in five years (also 2017 quarterfinals).

After Mercy's first shot of the game was saved, Hutchings got the Dolphins on the scoreboard just over three minutes into the game. He followed again 1:26 later at the 11:31 mark with his 34th goal of the season.

Jack Gibbons answered at the 9:39 mark with his 22nd goal of the season to get the Mavericks within 2-1.

The Dolphins scored the final two goals of the quarter for a 4-1 lead after 15 minutes of play. Off a restart of a missed shot, junior attackman Riley Larson (Fairfield, Conn./Ludlowe) came around the left post to tally his 38th goal of the season with 7:48 left in the quarter. Hutchings capped the scoring in the quarter with 3:41 left after taking a pass from sophomore midfielder Evan Kelly (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Aquinas Institute). With the goal, Hutchings becomes just the fifth player in the program's history to have at least 35 goals and 25 assists in the same season and the first to do so since Brandon Spillett '05 in 2004.

Le Moyne extended its run with the first five goals of the second quarter. Off a violation on the first faceoff of the second quarter, senior midfielder Dan Entenmann (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn) tallied his 21st goal of the season just six seconds in. Five and one-half minutes later, Entenmann scored again after taking a feed from freshman attackman Kevin Sheehan (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee). Just 48 seconds later, Kelly finished off a pass from Entenmann for his 12th goal of the year. Kelly made it 8-1 with 2:02 left in the half after collecting a pass from senior midfielder James Felix (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford). Sophomore midfielder Ben McCreary (Cicero, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) completed the run with 51 seconds left after receiving a feed from Hutchings.

Bobby Chillianis got the Mavericks within 9-2 at halftime with his 46th goal of the season off a pass from Tommy McPartland.

The Dolphins scored all three of the third quarter's goals. Sophomore attackman Devin Andrews (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua Academy/Stony Brook) opened the scoring at the 12:51 mark after receiving a feed from freshman midfielder Colin Sypek (Lake Worth, Fla./American Heritage School (Delray Beach)). Just 46 seconds later, senior midfielder Josh Slowinski (Williamsville, N.Y./Clarence) scored in an extra-man situation for his 23rd goal of the season. Sypek capped the quarter's scoring with his 14th goal of the year with 3:42 remaining.

Le Moyne scored the first two goals of the fourth quarter to take its largest lead of the game. Just 48 seconds into the stanza, Sypek found the back of the net after collecting a pass from Entenmann. Larson then scored with 8:05 to play off a pass from Sypek for Le Moyne's final goal.

Mercy scored the final two goals of the game. Dominic Scorcia scored in an extra-man situation with 4:55 left after taking a feed from Joe Poggio. Just 17 seconds later, long-stick Anthony DeCeglia recorded his first goal of the season following an extended scrum for the ball off the faceoff.

Junior goalkeeper Riley Smith (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker/Onondaga C.C.) registered six saves over 57:00 between the pipes to earn his 16th win of the season. Ryan Gibbons tallied 10 saves in suffering his second loss of the season. The Dolphin defense limited the Mavericks to just 14 shots, including no more than four in a single quarter, while forcing 18 turnovers.
