Manchester, N.H. – Senior guard
McKayla Roberts (North Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) scored a single-game program record 39 points to lead the Le Moyne College women's basketball team to a 77-71 come-from-behind victory at Southern New Hampshire University on Saturday afternoon at Stan Spirou Field House in Northeast-10 Conference action.
Roberts eclipsed the previous single-game program record of 36 set by Jennifer Shea '89 in 1988 and then equaled by her 1989. Roberts' previous career high was 35, which she scored against Saint Anselm College in the NCAA East Region final last March. Roberts, who also had six rebounds and five assists, scored eight points in the first quarter, 12 in the second, 10 in the third and nine in the fourth. She hit 7-of-11 three-pointers for the second straight game, again equaling her and Jennifer Dennett's single-game record. With her 10th point of the game, she passed Kim Black '93 for third in career scoring and with her 31st point, she passed Jennifer Feher '04 for second in the program's history. With her seven three-pointers, she moves into sixth place in NE10 history for made three-pointers with 258, passing Saint Rose's Courtney Ludwig '07 (255) and Bentley's Keri Flynn '04 (257).
Sophomore forward
Jenna Zimmerman (Adams, N.Y./South Jefferson) was Le Moyne's second double-digit scorer with 13 points, including nine in the third quarter, to go with four rebounds, four blocks and three assists.
Karlee Ziliak led four Penmen in double figures with 15 points, including eight in the third quarter. Adriana Timberlake came off the bench to score 14 points, including seven in the second quarter. Victoria Dean turned in 12 points, including seven in the third quarter, and Jenna Roche had 11 points, including seven in the first quarter.
The Dolphins jumped out to a pair of five-point leads over the opening four minutes of the game, the second of which came at 10-5 on Roberts' second three-pointer of the game.
Southern New Hampshire answered with seven straight to take its first lead of the game. Gyanna Russell had the first four points and then Timberlake made a three-pointer for the lead.
After the Dolphins regained the lead at 16-14 with 1:07 left in the first quarter, Timberlake made two free throws and Roche drilled a three-pointer at the buzzer to give the Penmen a 19-16 lead after 10 minutes of play.
Following two points by each team in the opening two and one-half minutes of the second quarter, Timberlake made a three-pointer and a fast-break lay-up to put the Penmen up 26-18.
The Dolphins closed within 26-22, but the Penmen answered with a 9-3 spurt to take their first double-digit lead of the game. Sarah Deyo made a pair of lay-ups around a three-pointer by Ziliak before Timberlake knocked down a jumper in the paint for a 35-25 lead with 4:06 until halftime.
After Dean hit a three-pointer to give the Penmen their largest lead of the game, 40-29, with 1:24 left, the Dolphins scored the final five points of the half. Roberts hit a three-pointer and then finished off the half's scoring with a jumper with 12 seconds left.
The Penmen pushed their lead out to 10 on a pair of occasions over the opening 2:06 of the second half before the Dolphins started their comeback. Following a Roche lay-up for a 51-41 lead, the Dolphins scored seven straight points and 18 of the next 24 to take the lead. Liz Millea (Cooperstown, N.Y./Cooperstown) had four and senior forward
Colleen Corcoran (Beverly, Mass./Bishop Fenwick) put the Dolphins in front with a put-back lay-up with 2:55 left in the quarter.
Ziliak tied the score at 59 with two free throws with 1:57 left, but Roberts made a jumper in the paint with 23 seconds left to give the Dolphins a 61-59 lead after 30 minutes of action.
After each team scored four points over the opening three and one-half minutes of the fourth quarter, Roberts made a lay-up and a three-pointer to put the Dolphins up by seven, 70-63, with 5:29 to go. The lay-up moved her passed Feher for second on the all-time scoring chart.
The Penmen scored six straight points to get back within one, but could not tie the score or take the lead.
Zimmerman answered with a lay-up with 2:19 left to put the Dolphins back up by four, but Russell converted two free throws eight seconds later.
The Penmen would not score again as they missed their last four shots and committed a turnover.
Roberts put the game away with four free throws in the last 21 seconds. Her second free throw with 21 seconds left eclipsed Shea's single-game scoring record.
Le Moyne (10-6, 6-3 NE10) is back on the road on Wednesday at Saint Michael's College at 3:30 p.m.
