BROWN AND ROLAND LEAD SECOND-HALF EXPLOSION AS MEN’S BASKETBALL DEFEATS SAINT ANSELM, 108-88

Syracuse, N.Y. – Seniors Tom Brown (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) and Ryan Roland (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill/Mercyhurst) each recorded career-high point totals to lead the Le Moyne College men's basketball team to a 108-88 victory over Saint Anselm College in Northeast-10 Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Ted Grant Court.

Le Moyne's 108 points, 40 made field goals and 17 made three-pointers are all the most by the Dolphins in an NE10 contest (491 NE10 games) in their 24 seasons in the conference.

Brown finished the contest with 29 points, including 19 in the first half, and pulled down eight rebounds. His previous career high of 21 came at Adelphi on November 21, 2017. Roland registered 22 of his 27 points in the second half, including going 6-for-6 from three-point range after halftime, while dishing out five assists. His previous career high of 26 points came against Chestnut Hill on November 10, 2019. Redshirt senior guard Malik Garner (Midland, Mich./H.H. Dow/Sunrise Christian Academy/Saginaw Valley State) netted nine of his 14 points after halftime, while dishing four assists and posting four rebounds. Sophomore guard Nino Hernandez (Gardner, Mass./The Winchendon School/Bryant) tallied nine of his 13 points in the first half. Senior guard Zay Jennings (Allentown, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic/Caldwell) posted 10 points and grabbed five rebounds.

Danny Evans led the Hawks in the loss with 22 points, including 12 in the first half, and five assists. Miles Tention posted 17 of his 19 points in the first half, while Chris Paul recorded eight points in each half. Gustav Suhr-Jessen turned in a double-double of 15 points, including 12 in the second half, and 15 rebounds.

After the teams traded baskets over the opening two minutes, Saint Anselm ran off eight straight points to take a 13-6 lead with 15:36 remaining. Paul made a jumper, Tention hit a three-pointer and then Tyler Arbuckle drilled a three-pointer.

The Dolphins answered with a 7-0 run to even the score at 15 with 13:24 to go. Brown made three straight shots in the paint and added a free throw after the third basket.

Following 12 points from each team over the next five and one-half minutes, Saint Anselm, specifically Evans, rattled off eight straight points over 49 seconds.

Le Moyne countered with a 10-3 jaunt to trim its deficit back to one with 3:28 left in the half. Hernandez scored in the paint, Garner drilled a three-pointer, graduate student forward Lonnie Rivera (Spring Valley, N.Y./Don Bosco Prep (N.J.)/American/Wagner) buried a three-pointer of his own and then Hernandez scored in the paint again.

Saint Anselm pushed its lead back to six on a pair of occasions, but the Dolphins, specifically Brown, scored five of the last seven points of the half to get within 50-48 at halftime.

Roland and the Dolphins exploded out of the gates in the second half to turn their two-point deficit into a 14-point advantage after 4:15. Roland drilled three-pointers on each of Le Moyne's first five possessions around a three-pointer by Arbuckle to give the Dolphins a 63-53 lead. After Suhr-Jessen made a three-pointer, Hernandez and Roland made lay-ups and Garner followed with a three-pointer for a 70-56 lead with 15:45 to play.

Saint Anselm responded with a 15-4 run to get back within three with 12:02 remaining. Suhr-Jessen made two free throws, Evans scored eight straight points and then Paul scored the final five points of the stretch.

After the teams traded points over the next three minutes, the Dolphins used a 17-5 run over 3:32 to regain control of the game. Rivera, Brown and Jennings each scored five points in the span, while Garner made two free throws.

Saint Anselm scored five straight points to get back within 13 (98-85) with 4:19 left, but the Dolphins scored 10 of the game's last 13 points. Hernandez had a fast-break dunk, Roland drilled his sixth three-pointer of the half, Brown converted a lay-up and senior guard Wyatt Self (Davidson, N.C./Pine Lake Prep/Elev8 Sports Institute/Campbell) ended the game's scoring with a deep three-pointer.
