SAINT ANSELM DOWNS WOMEN’S BASKETBALL, 75-70, IN REMATCH OF EAST REGION FINAL

Syracuse, N.Y. – Shannon Ryan and Peyton Steinman each recorded double-doubles to lead Saint Anselm College to a 75-70 victory over the Le Moyne College women's basketball team in Northeast-10 Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Ted Grant Court.

Senior guard McKayla Roberts (North Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) led all scorers in the contest with 28 points, including 15 in the fourth quarter. She increased her career point total to 1650 and now trails Jennifer Shea '89 by just 26 for the most in the program's history. Sophomore forward Jenna Zimmerman (Adams, N.Y./South Jefferson) registered her second double-double of the season with 15 points, 11 in the first half, and 13 rebounds, nine in the first half. Redshirt junior guard Liz Millea (Cooperstown, N.Y./Cooperstown) was the third Dolphin in double figures with 11 points.

Ryan, who is tied with Roberts for first in scoring in NE10 games at 22.5 points, scored 24 points, including 13 in the second half, and grabbed 10 rebounds. Steinman turned in 21 points, including 15 in the second half, 11 rebounds (six offensive) and five assists. Sara Messler scored 10 of her 12 points in the second half, while Grace Guachione posted 10 points.

After the teams split the initial 26 points of the game, Saint Anselm scored five straight points on a lay-up by Messler and a conventional three-point play by Ryan.

Le Moyne answered with seven of the last nine points of the quarter to even the score at 20 after 10 minutes of play. Senior forward Colleen Corcoran (Beverly, Mass./Bishop Fenwick) converted back-to-back shots in the paint and then Millea drilled a three-pointer.

The back-and-forth play continued in the second quarter as the margin bounced between two points in favor of the Hawks to one point in favor of the Dolphins for the first seven minutes of the quarter.

The Dolphins closed out the quarter with the last five points to take a 32-29 lead into halftime. Corcoran made a three-pointer from the left corner with 2:54 left and Roberts capped the scoring with a runner in the paint just before the buzzer.

After the Dolphins took a pair of five-point leads in the first minute of the third quarter, Saint Anselm scored eight straight points. Ryan made a lay-up and then Guachione drilled a pair of three-pointers.

The Dolphins responded with five straight points to take the lead back as sophomore guard Erin Fouracre (Loudonville, N.Y./Colonie Central) converted a lay-up and Roberts drained her first three-pointer of the game.

After Roberts hit another three-pointer with 4:05 left to give the Dolphins a 45-44 lead, their last of the game, Saint Anselm scored the last five points of the quarter. Ryan scored in the paint and then Messler drilled a three-pointer for a 49-45 lead after 30 minutes of play.

The Hawks and Roberts traded baskets over the opening four minutes of the fourth quarter before Messler drained a three-pointer with 5:07 remaining to give Saint Anselm its largest lead of the game at 63-56.

Roberts answered with a three-pointer and a conventional three-point play to get the Dolphins back within one, 63-62, with 4:05 to go, but Saint Anselm responded with six consecutive points. Steinman scored the first four points before Ryan made two foul shots.

Fouracre and Millea each buried three-pointers in the final 1:26, but Steinman went 4-for-4 from the foul line in the last 25 seconds to hold off the Dolphins.
