Syracuse, N.Y. – Fallyn Stephens connected on six three-pointers to lead 10th-ranked Adelphi University to a 67-62 victory over the Le Moyne College women's basketball team in Northeast-10 Conference action on Tuesday night at Ted Grant Court.
Senior guard
McKayla Roberts (North Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) led the Dolphins in the setback with 17 points, including 12 in the second half, and four assists, the second of which moved her past Saint Rose's Lynsey Timbrouck '11 for eighth place in NE10 history with her 595th career assist. Liz Millea (Cooperstown, N.Y./Cooperstown) netted 14 of her 16 points after halftime. Sophomore guard
Erin Fouracre (Loudonville, N.Y./Colonie Central) posted 11 points, dished out a career-best seven assists and grabbed five rebounds. Sophomore forward
Jenna Zimmerman (Adams, N.Y./South Jefferson) grabbed 11 rebounds and posted a career-best seven blocks, the most by a Le Moyne sophomore since Emily Anspach '96 had nine on January 10, 1994.
Stephens finished the game with 20 points, including 11 in the second half. Leonie Edringer posted a double-double of 15 points, including 11 in the second half, and 11 rebounds, including six offensive. Katie Murphy scored 10 of her 14 points in the second quarter, while adding six rebounds and three steals.
After Edringer opened the game's scoring, the Dolphins scored eight straight points. Senior forward
Colleen Corcoran (Beverly, Mass./Bishop Fenwick) started the run with a lay-up, Fouracre recorded a conventional three-point play and then Roberts drained a three-pointer to force an Adelphi timeout.
Emily Miccile made a lay-up and Stephens followed with a three-pointer to get the Panthers within one, but the Dolphins answered with six straight points to take their largest lead of the game. Sophomore forward
Madison Shetrom (Altoona, Pa./Altoona) made back-to-back lay-ups and then Millea had a fast-break lay-up off a steal.
The Panthers scored the final five points of the quarter to get within 16-14 after 10 minutes of play. Stephen drained another three-pointer and Miccile closed out the period with a shot in the paint.
Adelphi rattled off 20 of the 26 points in the second quarter to take a 34-22 lead into halftime. Murphy scored 10 of the points, while Stephens and Julia Strachan each drained three-pointers.
After Stephens gave the Panthers their largest lead of the game, 37-24, with a three-pointer 34 seconds into the third quarter, the Dolphins ran off 16 consecutive points to regain the lead. Roberts made a three-pointer, Fouracre made a foul shot, Corcoran and Zimmerman converted lay-ups and then Millea scored eight straight points for a 40-37 advantage.
The Panthers responded with six straight points and 13 of the next 17 to take a 50-44 lead after three quarters of play. Edringer scored the first six points (without the Dolphins successfully possessing the ball in between), Miccile made a lay-up and then Stephens scored the final five points, inclduign a three-pointer to beat the quarter buzzer.
Adelphi extended its run to 17-4 to push its lead back to double-digits. Murphy started the fourth quarter with a fast-break lay-up and then Edringer converted two foul shots.
After Roberts and Jess Camarda traded three-pointers, Le Moyne followed with nine straight points to get back within one with 4:29 to play. Millea hit a three-pointer, Fouracre followed with one of her own and then Roberts drained her fourth three-pointer of the contest off an offensive rebound by Corcoran.
Stephens was able to answered with a three-pointer and Murphy added a jumper to push Adelphi's lead back to six with 2:38 remaining.
Roberts and Millea drilled three-pointers around two free throws by Edringer to get the Dolphins within 64-62 with 16 seconds left, but Edringer made a foul shot and Camarda converted two to close out the game.
Le Moyne (15-8, 11-5 NE10), which fell into a tie with Pace University for second place in the Southwest Division, is back on the hardwood on Saturday at Southern Connecticut State at 1:30 p.m.
