EAST STROUDSBURG EDGES BASEBALL, 2-1, IN 12 INNINGS IN SEASON OPENER

Cary, N.C. – Shortstop CJ Lopez lifted a bloop single to shallow right field in the bottom of the 12th inning to give East Stroudsburg University a 2-1 win over the Le Moyne College baseball team in the season opener for both teams on Friday afternoon at the USA Baseball National Training Complex.

The Warriors opened the game's scoring with a run in the bottom of the second inning. Right fielder Tommy Dunleavy drew a walk with one out, stole second and then came around to score on a single to center by left fielder Anthony Torreullas.

Le Moyne evened the score at one apiece in the top of the third inning. Senior left fielder Nicholas Jacques (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Shenendehowa) led off with a triple to center field and raced home on a sacrifice fly to left by junior catcher Drew Fureno (Canajoharie, N.Y./Fort Plain).

Each team advanced a runner to third and four others to second over the next eight innings, but were unable to plate the go-ahead run.

East Stroudsburg took advantage of a hit-and-run in the bottom of the 12th to score the winning run. Catcher Tim Haverstick singled to left field with two outs. Haverstick then took off for second base, which drew the second baseman towards second base. Lopez lifted a fly ball to shallow right field that was able to drop into the open space, allowing Haverstick to race home for the walk-off win.

Junior righty Sam Byrns (Mount Kisco, N.Y./Fox Lane) took the loss for the Dolphins after yielding one run in one and two-thirds innings out of the bullpen. Justin Guidos collected the victory for the Warriors after striking out a pair of batters in the 12th.

Le Moyne (0-1) continues play at the NTC on Saturday against Mansfield University (1:00 p.m.) and Frostburg State University (5:00 p.m.).
