SECOND-RANKED MEN’S LACROSSE OPENS SEASON WITH 18-6 WIN OVER ROBERTS WESLEYAN

Syracuse, N.Y. – Senior all-America attackman Matt Hutchings (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) scored a career-high five goals to lead the second-ranked Le Moyne College men's lacrosse team to an 18-6 season-opening win over Roberts Wesleyan College on Saturday afternoon at Ted Grant Field.

The Dolphins opened the game with the first five goals over the initial 4:48. Senior midfielder Hans Zimmer (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) opened the scoring just 29 seconds into the contest. Hutchings followed 58 seconds later with his first tally of the day. He pushed the margin to 3-0 with another unassisted goal with 10:54 remaining. Just 28 seconds later, graduate student midfielder Nick Cunningham (Syracuse, N.Y., N.Y./West Genesee/Loyola) netted his first goal as a Dolphin off a pass from sophomore attackman Kevin Sheehan (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee). Senior attackman Riley Larson (Fairfield, Conn./Ludlowe) capped the opening outburst just 14 seconds later.

Hunter Lemieux got the Redhawks on the scoreboard with 9:21 left off a pass from Matt Gademske.

Le Moyne pushed its lead to 9-1 with four goals in a span of 4:08. Sophomore midfielder Colin Sypek (Lake Worth, Fla./American Heritage School) started the streak at the 8:45 mark after taking a pass from Larson. Just 22 seconds later, Hutchings completed hit hat trick after collecting a feed from senior midfielder Ross Filtch (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus/Siena). Larson made the score 8-1 with 5:34 left and then fed Cunningham for his second of the day with 4:37 to remaining.

The teams alternated goals over the opening 5:20 of the second quarter. Filtch scored with 14:17 left for the Dolphins, while Gavin Marsh countered at the 10:58 mark for the Redhawks. Zimmer answered back 30 seconds later, while Gademske scored in an extra-man situation with 9:40 to go off a feed from Reid Jackowski.

Larson pushed Le Moyne's lead to nine for the third time with 5:47 left off a pass from junior midfielder Kaiden Tubbert (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn/Bridgton Academy), while Hutchings followed 32 seconds later with his fourth marker of the contest.

Marsh got the Redhawks within 13-4 with 2:42 remaining in the half.

Sheehan opened the scoring in the third quarter off a cross-crease dish from Hutchings, while Marsh answered back 1:36 later with his third goal of the game.

Le Moyne tallied the final three goals of the quarter for a 17-5 lead after 30 minutes of play. Zimmer netted his third of the day with 7:03 left, Larson scored off a pass from junior midfielder Evan Kelly (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Aquinas Institute) with 4:48 to go and Hutchings completed his scoring with 3:04 remaining.

Following almost 14 and one-half minutes of scoreless play in the fourth quarter, Connor Jones scored for the Redhawks to snap his team's scoring drought of 26:44.

Freshman Joel Firth (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) completed the game's scoring with 10 seconds left off a feed from sophomore midfielder John Bergan (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee).

Senior goalkeeper Riley Smith (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker/Onondaga C.C.) tallied five saves in 45 minutes between the pipes for the Dolphins. Pat Hynes posted 13 saves in the loss for the Redhawks.

Le Moyne (1-0), which improved to 5-0 against the Redhawks since Roberts Wesleyan moved to NCAA Division II, is back in action on Saturday against 10th-ranked Mercy College at 1:00 p.m.
