Syracuse, N.Y. – Elijah Bailey and Quashawn Lane each scored 16 points to lead fifth-seeded University of New Haven to a 75-73 upset of the top-seeded Le Moyne College men's basketball team in the quarterfinals of the Northeast-10 Conference Championship on Sunday afternoon at Ted Grant Court.
With the loss, the Dolphins will now have to wait until next Sunday night at 10:30 p.m. on NCAA.com for the announcement of the NCAA Division II championship field to see if their season will continue. Before falling in the regular season finale to Pace and today, the Dolphins were ranked fourth in the East Region.
Graduate student guard
Oshea Gairey (Toronto, Ontario/St. John's Catholic Prep (Md.)/Simon Fraser) and senior guard
Ryan Roland (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill/Mercyhurst) each scored 15 points for the Dolphins, including 14 and 11, respectively, in the second half, while Gairey had three offensive rebounds and Roland had six rebounds and four assists. Senior forward
Tom Brown (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) registered his 11th double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds in his 116th career game, tied for the fifth-most in the program's history. Brown now has 212 defensive rebounds on the season, the fifth-most in a season by a Dolphin in the program's history.
Bailey scored eight points in each half, while adding seven rebounds. Lane had nine of his 16 points in the second half, while dishing out seven assists and posting four rebounds. Kessly Felizor recorded a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Derrick Rowland posted 11 points, including the 1000th of his career.
Davontrey Thomas opened the game with a pair of three-pointers to give the Chargers a 6-0 lead and Felizor and Bailey followed with baskets in the paint for an 11-4 advantage with 13:44 remaining.
After Brown hit his second three-pointer of the half, the Chargers rattled off 16 of the next 20 points to take a 16-point lead with 6:09 remaining in the half. Antonio Lopez had four of the first six points, Bailey tallied six points and Rowland and Ross Jones II each drained three-pointers.
Le Moyne scored nine of the next 12 points to trim its deficit to 10 with 4:14 left. Sophomore forward
BB Chuks-Mady (Hamilton, Ontario/GTA Prep) had five of the points and redshirt senior guard
Malik Garner (Midland, Mich./H.H. Dow/Sunrise Christian Academy/Saginaw Valley State) had the other four.
New Haven countered with a 10-4 spurt to regain its 16-point lead. Felizor had five of the points, Lane drilled a three-pointer and Rowland capped the span with a jumper.
Roland made a lay-up at the buzzer to get the Dolphins within 40-26 at halftime.
Rowland and Lane opened the second half with consecutive three-pointers to give the Chargers their first 20-point lead of game.
After the Dolphins scored the next four points, New Haven scored seven straight points for its largest lead of the game at 53-30 with 15:34 left. Thomas and Felizor scored in the paint before Rowland drained a three-pointer.
The Dolphins countered with a 12-4 run to get within 15 with 10:40 to go. Gairey and Roland each had six of the points for the Dolphins.
After Felizor recorded a conventional three-point play to give the Chargers a 62-44 lead with 9:36 left, the Dolphins scored 13 straight points and 21 of the next 24 to even the score at 65 with 3:40 remaining. Senior guard
Zay Jennings (Allentown, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic/Caldwell) scored seven of the first 13 points, Roland made four free throws and Brown started the outburst with a lay-up. Following another three-point play by Felizor, Brown made another lay-up, Roland connected on a free throw and then Gairey made a lay-up and a three-pointer from the right wing to knot the score at 65.
Following lay-ups by Bailey and Garner, Bailey gave the Chargers the lead for good with a lay-up with 1:25 remaining. Lane followed with a lay-up with 34 seconds left and two free throws with 24 seconds to go for a 73-67 lead.
Brown answered with a three-pointer, the 100th of his career, with 15 seconds left, but Bailey countered with two free throws with 12 seconds to play.
Gairey was fouled on a three-pointer five seconds later and converted all three free throws to get the Dolphins within 75-73 with seven seconds to play.
On the ensuing in-bounds pass, Bailey stepped on the sideline with 6.1 seconds left to give the Dolphins the ball back. Roland got off a three-pointer from the left wing, but the shot bounced off the rim. A Dolphin got the offensive rebound and tried to flick a shot towards the basket, but it fell short at the buzzer.
