Buffalo, N.Y. – Sophomore attackman
Kevin Sheehan (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) recorded a career-high eight points to lead the second-ranked Le Moyne College men's lacrosse team to an 18-12 win over Lake Erie College on Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action at St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute's Scott Athletic Complex.
The Dolphins netted the first three goals of the contest. The first came just 49 seconds in as sophomore midfielder
John Howes (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) finished off a pass from senior midfielder
Ross Filtch (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus/Siena). Sheehan tallied his first of six goals in the game at the 12:36 mark after collecting a feed from Filtch. The Dolphins took a 3-0 lead with 4:14 left in the quarter as graduate student midfielder
Nick Cunningham (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee/Loyola) recorded his fifth goal of the season after taking a pass from senior attackman
Matt Hutchings (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus).
Lake Erie answered with the final two goals of the first quarter. Neil Gardner got the storm on the scoreboard with 3:09 left with his 12th goal of the season. Kyle Barna followed one minute later with his eighth of the year.
Barna scored the first goal of the second quarter at the 13:36 mark to even the score at three apiece.
The Dolphins countered with four goals in a span of 4:17 to take control of the game. Senior attackman
Riley Larson (Fairfield, Conn./Ludlowe) started the run at the 12:59 mark with his eighth goal of the season. Howes followed at the 10:16 with his second goal off a feed from Hutchings. Larson scored 70 seconds after collecting a pass from Sheehan. With the goal, Larson recorded his 100th career point, the 32nd player in the program's history to reach the mark. Hutchings capped the streak with his 15th goal of the season with 8:42 left after picking up a loose ball on the crease.
Blain Wallace ended the stretch with his fifth goal of the season with 5:43 to go in the half.
Le Moyne tallied the next three goals in a span of 2:20. Sheehan registered his eighth goal of the day with 4:53 left off a feed from Hutchings. Just 42 seconds later, Larson finished off a pass from Sheehan. The duo reversed roles with 2:33 remaining to give the Dolphins a 10-4 lead.
Matthew Cromie found the back of the net with 1:57 left to get the Storm back within five.
Sophomore midfielder
John Bergan (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) finished off the scoring in the half with 36 seconds left with his third goal of the season.
Lake Erie started the scoring in the third quarter just 50 seconds in as Cromie posted his 13th goal of the year.
Sheehan pushed Le Moyne's lead back to six just 47 seconds later off a pass from Larson.
The Storm scored four of the next five goals to pull within three. Nathan Quinn tallied his second goal of the season with 9:36 left and Tommy Bischel followed 39 seconds later off a dish from Wallace.
After Cunningham pushed the margin back to five with 8:11 left off a pass from Larson, Barna registered his third goal of the day with 5:03 left. Wallace then scored off a feed from Cromie to make it 13-10 with 1:11 left.
Hutchings recorded his NE10-best 16th goal of the season with one second left for a 14-10 Le Moyne lead after three quarters of play.
Sheehan started the fourth quarter's scoring at the 9:44 mark off a pass from Hutchings.
The Storm took advantage of a Le Moyne penalty to score at the 6:23 mark as Gardner finished off a feed from Quinn.
Le Moyne responded with three straight goals to take its largest lead of the game. Just eight seconds after Gardner scored, senior face-off specialist
Ryan Gabriel (Homer, N.Y./Homer/Clarkson) tallied his first goal of the season after winning the ensuing faceoff. Sheehan scored his sixth goal of the contest with 2:56 to play after receiving a pass from junior midfielder
Kaiden Tubbert (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn/Bridgton Academy). In an extra-man situation, Larson registered his 11th goal of the season with 1:48 left off a feed from Hutchings, who moved into a tie with Kevin Kelly '15 for 11th on the program's career points list with 146.
Barna completed the game's scoring with eight seconds left.
Senior goalkeeper
Riley Smith (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker/Onondaga C.C.) earned his 20th win as a Dolphin after making eight saves, including two in each quarter. Gabriel finished the contest 24-for-27 at the faceoff dot with 14 ground balls. The 24 wins are the most by a Dolphin over the last 18 seasons, while the 14 ground balls are tied for the third-most in the span. Johnny Wilson III registered 14 saves, including 11 in the first half, in the loss for the Storm.
Le Moyne (4-0) is back in action on Saturday, March 14 at 18th-ranked Saint Anselm College at 12:00 p.m.
