Millersville, Pa. – Roy C. Ketcham High School products
Ryan Murphy (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) and
Nick Nevins (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) pitched and hit the Le Moyne College baseball team to a 6-4 win over #8/13 Millersville University in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday at Cooper Park. The Marauders broke open a 7-7 tie in the nightcap to win, 15-7.
The Dolphins started the day's scoring with a pair of runs on three hits in the first inning. Senior center fielder
Justin Tuey (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) led off the game with a single to center and came around to score on a double to left by junior left fielder
Jeff Wilson (Rochester, N.Y./Greece-Odyssey). Nevins followed with a single to drive in Wilson.
Millersville broke through with a run in the bottom of the third. With two outs, center fielder Cole Friese was hit by a pitch and came around to score on a single to left by second baseman Jimmy Losh.
Le Moyne got the run back in the next half inning without needing a hit. Junior designated hitter
Nick Hansen (Troy, N.Y./La Salle/Hudson Valley C.C.) walked to start the fourth, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, took third on a two-out wild pitch and scored on another wild pitch.
Millersville got back within a run in the bottom of the fifth. Designated hitter Bren Taylor tripled to right field with one out and scored on a sacrifice fly to left by right fielder Nick Mancuso.
The Dolphins took another two-run lead in the top of the sixth. Nevins led off with a four-pitch walk, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and took third on a single by Hansen. After a strikeout and a walk to load the bases, junior catcher
Drew Fureno (Canajoharie, N.Y./Fort Plain) was hit by a pitch to force in Nevins.
Millersville took advantage of a two-out error by the Dolphins in the bottom of the sixth to even the score at four apiece. Losh was hit by a pitch to start the inning and moved to second on a single to third by shortstop Eric Callahan. After the runners moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt and a groundout, third baseman Darin Miller reached on a throwing error by the third baseman, which allowed Losh and Callahan to score to tie the game.
Le Moyne answered with two runs on just one hit in the seventh and final inning. Tuey walked on five pitches to start the frame and came around to score the winning run on a one-out double to left by Nevins, who then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Nicholas Jacques (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Shenendehowa) walked on six pitches to force in Nevins with an insurance run.
Murphy retired three of the four batters he faced in the seventh to end the game.
Murphy tallied 10 strikeouts and scattered five hits over seven innings to earn the win, while yielding four runs (two earned). Nevins finished with two of the team's six hits, while scoring twice and driving in two. Paul Wilson took the loss for the Marauders after allowing the two seventh-inning runs.
The Dolphins opened the nightcap the same as they did the opener by scoring twice. Tuey drew a walk to start the game and advanced to second as Nevins reached on an error by the second baseman. Sophomore first baseman
Andrew Roden (Sherrill, N.Y./Vernon-Verona-Sherrill) followed with a double to right center to drive in Tuey and Nevins.
Millersville took its first lead of the day with three runs in the bottom of the first. After Losh and Callahan singled with one out, Luke Trainer homered to right field.
The Marauders added to their lead in the bottom of the second. Bren Taylor led off with a double to right field, advanced to third on the inning's second out and then scored on a wild pitch.
Le Moyne cut its deficit to one in the fifth as Wilson hit a one-out solo home run to left center.
Millersville scored three times on four hits in the bottom of the fifth. Losh led off with a single through the right side, stole second and advanced to third on a single by Callahan, which forced a pitching change. Trainer then doubled to left center to drive in Losh and Callahan. First baseman Jimmy Cain then doubled to left to plate Trainer.
The Dolphins scored four times on four hits in the top of the sixth to tie the score at seven, but left the bases loaded. Junior right fielder
Michael Smith (Montebello, N.Y./Suffern) opened the inning by reaching on a passed ball, took second on a single by Jacques and moved to third on a fly out. Freshman second baseman
Zach Brush (New York Mills, N.Y./Utica Notre Dame) then singled to left field to knock in Smith. Tuey followed with a double to left center to plate Jacques. Brush then scored on a groundout by Wilson, while Tuey scored on a single to right center by Nevins.
Millersville regained the lead with four runs on four hits in the bottom of the sixth. After Mancuso led off with a single, Friese homered to left field. Following a triple by Losh and a strikeout, Trainer launched a homer to left field.
The Marauders added four runs on three hits in the eighth. Trainer led off with a single, Cain doubled down the left field line and then second baseman Tyler Wright walked to load the bases. Bren Taylor followed with a sacrifice fly to right to drive in Trainer. After a strikeout, Cain scored on a passed ball. After Mancuso walked and stole second, Friese singled to left to drive in Wright and Mancuso.
Freshman
Jacob Marshall (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) suffered the loss after allowing four runs in one inning of work. Roden and Brush each recorded two hits for the Dolphins. Andrew Mayhew earned the victory for the Marauders after tossing two and one-third scoreless innings.
Le Moyne (8-5) concludes its three-game series with the Marauders on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
