WOMEN'S TENNIS OPENS BUSY WEEKEND WITH 5-2 VICTORY OVER ADELPHI

Syracuse, N.Y. - The Le Moyne College women's tennis team improved to 7-0 on the season with a 5-2 win over conference opponent Adelphi University at the Nottingham High School tennis courts on Saturday afternoon. The Dolphins now hold a 5-0 record in conference play while the Panthers drop to 4-2 overall and 3-2 in NE-10 competition.

Adelphi earned the first point of the day by winning two of the three doubles matches. Barbie Quagliardi and Caterina Federici handed the tandem of Birdem Oz (Istanbul, Turkey/Ted Ankara College Foundation HS) and Francesca Lilliegren (Guayaquil, Ecuador/ Colegio Alemán Humboldt Guayaquil) their first doubles loss this season. Oz and Lilliegren still hold an impressive 6-1 record in first position doubles matches in 2021. The team of Isabella Barona (Manta, Ecuador/Talentos de Manta) and Brooke Fernandez (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd) won their number three doubles match against Julia Kielan and Carolina Chaves 6-4, but Adelphi clinched the first point when Louisa Junghanns and Amanda Franstedt defeated Le Moyne's Marta Nunez (Rye, N.Y./Antonio Lopez (Spain)) and Fiona Pepper (Challapampa, Peru/Colegio Anglo Americano Prescott) 6-4 in the number two doubles match.

The Panthers got their second point in number one singles where Junghanns bested Barona 6-3, 6-3, but the Dolphins won the other five singles matches to earn the 5-2 win.

Fernandez downed Chaves 6-1, 2-6, 6-2 in the number six singles match. Lilliegren defeated Kielan 6-3, 1-6, 6-1 in the number five singles position, while Pepper handled Franstedt 6-4, 6-3 in the number four singles match. Nunez battled back to take down Federici in the number three singles match 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, and Oz used a rally of her own to defeat Quagliardi 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 in the number two singles match.

Here's what head coach Jeff Lonczak '03 had to say after the match:

"Today was a testament to our refuse to lose attitude. Losing the doubles point is never the plan but we persevered. Thanks to faithful grad assistant Jorman Reyes for his wisdom and ability to relate to the team. Amazing wins in singles with all four third sets won by the 'Phins. Huge team victory and looking forward to tomorrow!"

The Dolphins are back in action tomorrow, Sunday October 3, once again at the Nottingham High School tennis courts, where they will take on University of New Haven at 11:00 a.m.
