MEN’S TENNIS EDGED BY NIAGARA, 4-3, IN DUAL MATCH OPENER

Niagara University, N.Y. – William Gothlin rallied from down a set in the final match to give Niagara University a 4-3 win over the Le Moyne College men's tennis team on Saturday afternoon at the Niagara Tennis Courts.
 
The Purple Eagles recorded the first point of the afternoon by winning two of the three matches in the doubles competition. The team of Jorge Sedeno and Eduardo Villalpando were victorious at the third position over juniors Erik Adler (Lima, Peru/Santa Maria College) and Felipe Cruz (San Jose, Costa Rica/Blue Valley School/Saint Louis), 6-1. The Dolphins evened the doubles at one apiece as fifth year Tom Jarry (Paris, France/CNED Toulouse/Emmanuel) and junior Ethan Miller (Swindon, England/Cirencetser Kingshill School) registered a 6-3 win at the first position over Trevor Masi and Tanner Bedard. Gothlin and Manuel Alonso clinched the point for Niagara by edging redshirt seniors Jared Howard (Malmesbury, South Africa/Homeschooled/ASA College) and James Howard (Malmesbury, South Africa/Homeschooled/ASA College), 7-5, at the second spot.
 
The teams split the singles competition, giving the Purple Knights the victory. Niagara took a 2-0 lead on the afternoon as Masi was a 6-4, 6-0 winner at the second position over Jared Howard. Cruz got the Dolphins in the win column with a 6-4, 6-2 at the fourth spot over Roberto Vaca. Jarry improved to 7-0 on the year by defeating Alonso at the first position, 6-3, 6-4, to even the match at two apiece. Miller gave the Dolphins a 3-2 lead in the match by rallying to beat Villalpando at the fifth spot, 2-6, 7-6 (7-5), 10-8. Matt Andrus knotted the match at three with a 6-3, 5-7, 10-8 win at the sixth position over James Howard. After dropping the first set at the third spot to junior Kacper Piekarek (Wroclaw, Poland/Autorskrie Licea Artystyczne Akademickie/Missouri-Kansas City), 6-3, Gothlin won the second set, 6-3, and then won the tiebreaker, 13-11, to clinch the match for the Purple Eagles.
 
The Dolphins (0-1) conclude their Fall season on Sunday at Daemen College at 12:00 p.m.
