Syracuse, N.Y. – Joe Girard III led five players in double figures as Syracuse University registered a 90-50 victory over the Le Moyne College men's basketball team in an exhibition game on Monday night at the Carrier Dome.
"Playing Syracuse is a great experience for our players and it's a great game for the community," said head coach
Nate Champion '14. "I thought our team showed some good signs and Syracuse made our mistakes very glaring. It was great to have our guys going against someone else and is a great place for us to start."
Senior guard
Nino Hernandez (Gardner, Mass./The Winchendon School/Bryant) led the Dolphins offensively with 13 points, including eight in the second half, while adding five rebounds and three assists. Senior forward
Nicholas Johnson (Silver Spring, Md./John F. Kennedy/Frostburg St./Montgomery College) tallied 10 points, including seven in the second half, off of the bench. Redshirt freshman
Isaiah Elmore (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Catholic) led all players in the game with seven rebounds.
Girard, whose father Joe played for the Dolphins from 1990-94, led all scorers with 20 points, including 11 in the first half, while dishing out nine assists. Cole Swider posted 18 points, including 13 in the second half, and had five assists. Jimmy Boeheim, Buddy Boeheim and Benny Williams each recorded 11 points and five rebounds, while Williams added five steals.
After the teams traded baskets to open the game, the Orange took control with 14 straight points to open up a 19-4 lead. Buddy Boeheim hit a pair of three-pointers in the run, while Girard and Swider each nailed one.
The Dolphins cut their deficit back to 10 with a three-pointer from third-year sophomore forward
Luke Sutherland (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee/Siena/Bryant) and pair of free throws from redshirt freshman guard
Kevin Constant (Lawrence, Mass./Central Catholic/Tilton School) with 14:28 left in the half.
Following six points by each team over the next four minutes, the Orange scored eight straight points and 10 of 11 for a 36-17 lead with 6:52 to go in the half. Buddy Boeheim bookended the run with a three-pointer and a jumper.
Le Moyne got within 14 on a pair of occasions in the last three minutes, but Symir Torrence made a jumper with 54 seconds left to give Syracuse a 41-25 lead at halftime.
Hernandez started the scoring in the second half with a three-pointer, but the Orange responded with 17 consecutive points and 25 of 27 to blow the game open. Swider scored eight points in the initial span, while six others scored in the extended run.
Redshirt freshman guard
Christian Davis (Denver, Colo./Mullen/New Hampton School) and Hernandez buried three-pointers around a Syracuse jumper to get the Dolphins within 68-36 with 9:44 to play.
Benny Williams made three free throws, Swider converted a lay-up and Girard hit a three-pointer to give Syracuse it's first 40-point lead of the game.
Syracuse's margin bounced between 38 and 42 the remainder of the game.
Le Moyne opens the regular season on November 16 at Indiana University of Pennsylvania at 7:00 p.m.
