WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TAKES DOWN VISITING ROBERTS WESLEYAN COLLEGE, 61-50

Syracuse, N.Y. - The Le Moyne College women's basketball team got off to a slow start at Ted Grant Court on Sunday evening against non-conference opponent Roberts Wesleyan College, but the Dolphins eventually found their groove and earned a 61-50 win over the Redhawks in part due to the play of senior forwards Emma Brinker (East Aurora, N.Y./East Aurora) and Jenna Zimmerman (Adams, N.Y./South Jefferson) who each finished the contest with a double-double.

Following a three point field goal from Roberts Wesleyan guard Nyah Johnson with 4:45 remaining in the first quarter the Redhawks held a 13-4 lead. The nine point advantage ended up being the Redhawks largest lead of the game.

The Dolphins responded by going on an 10-0 run to take the lead by the end of the first quarter. Erin Fouracre (Loudonville, N.Y./Colonie Central), Saeeda Abdul-Aziz (Schenectady, N.Y./Mohonasen/Davidson), and Haedyn Roberts (Holland Patent, N.Y./Holland Patent) each scored a layup in transition during the Le Moyne run, and Lexi Gruss (Binghamton, N.Y./Binghamton) knocked down a three-point field goal to put Le Moyne up 14-13 at the end of the first period.

Zimmerman scored first in the second quarter, grabbing an offensive rebound off a Brinker missed put-back and converting the layup to put Le Moyne up 16-13.

Fouracre ripped a steal and scored a layup on the other end to give the Dolphins a 23-15 advantage with 5:26 left in the half.

The Redhawks cut the deficit to 23-22 after a made three-point field goal by senior guard Taryn Wilson and a made two-point field goal by junior forward Brianna Williiams.

Le Moyne then scored three straight baskets to extend their lead back out to 29-22. Roberts converted a layup, Brinker grabbed another offensive rebound and scored a layup, and then Brinker scored a fast-break basket off a pass from Zimmerman with 1:55 remaining in the half.

Zimmerman and Brinker led the Dolphins in first half scoring with seven points each, and both Le Moyne forwards grabbed at least 10 first half rebounds (Zimmerman with 10, Brinker with 11). The Dolphins held a 29-24 lead at halftime.

Baker started the third quarter with a fast-break layup, Abdul-Aziz knocked down a three-point field goal at the 8:03 mark, and Zimmerman scored a layup with 7:44 remaining in the quarter to extend the Le Moyne lead to 38-27.

Dimitra Gkizani scored a put-back in the paint for Roberts Wesleyan with 7:20 left in the third quarter, and Toni Neely-Primus did the same at the 6:23 mark to get the Redhawks back within seven points.

As the teams traded baskets the Redhawks were able to keep the deficit under 10 points until the 3:18 mark of the third quarter when Gruss drained a three-pointer off a pass from Baker to put Le Moyne up 46-34.

A Baker put-back with 30 seconds left would be the final points of the period and the Dolphins entered the fourth quarter with a 48-34 lead.

Abdul-Aziz drilled a three-point field goal with 6:22 left in the fourth quarter to give Le Moyne their largest lead of the game at 51-34.

The Redhawks clawed their way back into the game and got within 10 points once again after a Wilson three-pointer made it 54-45 in favor of the Dolphins with 3:42 remaining in regulation.

Brinker came up big for Le Moyne during their next offensive possession, grabbing an offensive rebound off a Fouracre drive and converting the layup to extend the Le Moyne lead back to double digits. Brinker grabbed seven fourth quarter rebounds and finished the game with a career-high 19 boards, including 13 offensive rebounds. The senior forward also contributed a game-high 16 points to finish with her fourth consecutive double-double.

Wilson made two free throws and Georgia Haverlock made a three-point field goal with 2:47 remaining to cut the Le Moyne lead to 56-50.

The Dolphins shot just 5-10 from the free-throw line during the final two and a half minutes of the game, but they did not allow another Redhawks point following the three-pointer from Haverlock and eventually earned a 61-50 non-conference victory to improve to 3-1 on the season.

Here's what Head Coach Mary Grimes had to say after the win:

"I liked the fight that we had. It wasn't an easy game, (Roberts Wesleyan) definitely shot the three really, really well. Going into Adelphi we're going to have to defend the three a lot better, but I'm really proud of their fight and their resiliency that they had tonight."

On Zimmerman and Brinker both finishing with double-digit rebounds:

"... half of rebounding is effort, and they're just getting on the boards relentlessly and I love it."

The Dolphins will be back in action on Wednesday, December 1 at 5:00 p.m. EST when they take on NE10 Conference foe Adelphi University at home on Ted Grant Court.
