WOMEN'S SOCCER FALLS 1-0 IN SEASON FINALE

Syracuse, N.Y. - The Le Moyne College women's soccer team lost a tight match at home to the visiting Saint Michael's College Purple Knights by a score of 1-0 during the second half of a soccer double header at Ted Grant Field. The match was the last of the season for the Dolphins, who finished the 2021 campaign with a 2-10-3 record.

20 minutes into the match, graduate forward Maddison Vine (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Lisbon) whipped a cross towards the middle of the Le Moyne attacking third from the left wing to Amya Naja (Gansevoort, N.Y./South Glens Falls). Saint Michael's goalkeeper Katie Escobedo pounced on the ball after Naja's first touch and put an end to the Dolphins attack.

Senior midfielder Ali Greco (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) and redshirt-freshman Danielle Casey (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) both took a shot in the first half, but neither were on target and the game remained scoreless at the end of the first 45 minutes.

The Purple Knights broke the tie in the 54th minute when Claire Williams attacked a loose ball in the Le Moyne penalty area and knocked it into the back of the net to give Saint Michael's a 1-0 lead.

With 32 minutes remaining in the second half, Brooke Wilson (Rochester, N.Y./Hilton) carried the ball up the right sideline and sent a pass to Naja on her left inside the 18-yard box. Naja took a touch towards the goal line and ripped a shot with her right foot that sailed high and wide-right of the net.

Forward Hannah Brown Trice (Seneca Falls, N.Y./Mynderse Academy) took a shot in the 78th minute, but the senior could not get the ball on frame and the Dolphins deficit remained at 1-0.

The Dolphins kept looking for the equalizing goal down the stretch. With just over three minutes remaining in the second half, redshirt-freshman midfielder Magda Aspholm (Östersund, Sweden/Jämtlands Gymnasium Wargentin) whipped in a cross from the right sideline, into the Saint Michael's penalty area towards the far post. The pass, intended for Rachel Wengender (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) making a run towards the back post, skipped past everyone and rolled to the opposite sideline.

The Dolphins were unable to find the equalizer and fell 1-0 at home.

Here's what head coach Carrie Bonus had to say after the match:

"We moved the ball around really well today, good team effort. We would like to thank the seniors for their dedication to the program. This senior class has done a great job keeping us together and positive during the adversity of a tough season. Thank you to the entire team for always showing up and giving your best effort."
