BASEBALL SWEEPS SAINT ROSE IN HOME-OPENING DOUBLEHEADER, 18-7, 8-4

Syracuse, N.Y. – Senior third baseman/first baseman Derrick Miller (Westernville, N.Y./Rome Free Academy/Hudson Valley C.C.) scored six runs to lead the Le Moyne College baseball team to a sweep of The College of Saint Rose in a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Dick Rockwell Field. The Dolphins won the opener, 18-7, and took the nightcap, 8-4.

The Golden Knights opened the day's scoring with two runs on two hits and a Le Moyne error in the first inning. Left fielder Samuel Brioso walked and shortstop Andrew Pedone singled to open the game and then each moved up on a groundout. The next batter lined out to the first baseman, who then threw the ball away, which allowed Brioso and Pedone to score.

Le Moyne evened the score at two apiece in the second on two hits. Junior first baseman/pitcher Andrew Roden (Sherrill, N.Y./Vernon-Verona-Sherrill/UMass Lowell) was hit by a pitch, Miller singled to left center and junior designated hitter/first baseman Ty Syta (Hamburg, N.Y./St. Francis) singled to center to load the bases. Junior second baseman Drew Carroll (Clifton Park, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy (Albany)) and senior catcher Drew Fureno (Canajoharie, N.Y./Fort Plain) each followed with sacrifice flies to drive in Roden and Miller, respectively.

The Dolphins took the lead with three runs in the third. Senior right fielder Michael Smith (Montebello, N.Y./Suffern) was hit by a pitch and junior shortstop Nick Nevins (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) singled through the right side to start the frame. After an out, Smith scored on an error by the pitcher on a pickoff attempt of Nevins. Followed another out, Miller and Syta were hit by pitches to load the bases. Carroll then singled through the left side to plate Nevins and Miller.

Le Moyne scored twice in the bottom of the fourth. Smith led off the inning with a home run to right field. Nevins then walked and motored over to third base on another failed pickoff attempt. Following an out and Roden reaching on an error, Miller lifted a sacrifice fly down the right field line to drive in Nevins.

The Golden Knights got one run back in the fifth on a leadoff home run by second baseman Jared Reed.

The Dolphins blew the game open in the sixth with 11 runs on just four hits. Nevins led off with a walk, moved to second on a single by senior left fielder Jeff Wilson (Rochester, N.Y./Greece-Odyssey) and scored on a double to right center by Roden to force a pitching change. Miller then singled down the right field line to plate Wilson. After a strikeout and a walk by Carroll to load the bases, Fureno, graduate student center fielder Justin Tuey (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston), Smith and Nevins drew consecutive run-scoring walks. Wilson followed with a grand slam to make it 17-3. After a pair of Saint Rose errors around a walk by Syta to load the bases, freshman pinch-hitter/catcher Brady Fureno (Canajoharie, N.Y./Fort Plain) walked to force in a run.

Saint Rose scored twice in the eighth two hits. Third baseman James Dolan singled with one out and was replaced at first by pinch-runner/third baseman Remington Almarante. Following an out, a hit batsman and a walk to load the bases, designated hitter Louis Gendron singled to center to drive in Almarante and right fielder/left fielder Riley Nagle.

The Golden Knights added two runs in the ninth on two hits and two Le Moyne errors. Left fielder Isaiah Peace led off with a single through the left side and moved to second on a one-out single by first baseman Drew Signor. After Almarante walked to load the bases and an out, Nagle reached on a fielding error by the second baseman, which allowed Peace to score. Brandon Taveras then reached on an error by the shortstop, which allowed Signor to score.

Sophomore Sam DiGeorge (Canastota, N.Y./Canastota) earned the victory on the mound after striking out seven over six innings, while yielding three runs (one earned). Nevins, Wilson and Miller each had two of Le Moyne's 12 hits, while Nevins and Miller each scored four runs. John Braun took the loss after giving up five runs over two and two-thirds innings.

In the nightcap, the Dolphins scored three times in the second without getting a hit. Senior catcher Nick Hansen (Troy, N.Y./LaSalle Institute/Hudson Valley C.C.) and Miller drew one-out walks and then senior designated hitter Nick Spinella (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) walked with two outs to load the bases. Freshman second baseman Jason Boule (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy (Syracuse)) then reached on a fielder's choice, while Hansen scored as the third baseman couldn't handle the ball trying to tag Miller. Tuey and Smith then drew run-scoring walks.

Saint Rose got on the scoreboard in the third with a run on one hit. Reed walked with one out, moved to third on a single to left center by designated hitter Francisco Infante and scored on a groundout by Pedone.

Le Moyne scored three more runs in the third with the benefit of just two hits. After Miller walked with two outs and Syta was hit by a pitch to force a pitching change, Spinella doubled to left field line to knock in Miller and Syta. Boule followed with a double down the right field line to plate Spinella.

The Dolphins pushed their lead to 8-1 with a pair of runs in the fourth. Nevins doubled to left center with one out and then Wilson and Hanson walked to load the bases. Nevins then scampered home on a wild pitch. Miller then lifted a sac fly down the right field line to knock in Wilson.

The Golden Knights scored three times in the sixth on three hits. Pedone led off with a single to center, moved to second on a wild pitch, took third on a groundout and scored on another groundout. After a walk by center fielder Janiel Ramirez, right fielder Garrett Klahr singled to right center to drive in Ramirez and force a pitching change. Following a walk, left fielder Stephan MacMeans singled to left to drive in Klahr.

Roden picked up the win on the mound after striking out five over five and two-thirds innings, while yielding four runs. Randall Alejo took the loss after giving up five runs (two earned) over two and two-thirds innings despite not allowing a hit.
