Syracuse, N.Y. – Senior southpaw
Joe Vail (Cromwell, Conn./Xavier) fired a seven-inning no-hitter in game one as the Le Moyne College baseball team registered a sweep of The College of Saint Rose in a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at Dick Rockwell Field. The Dolphins claimed the opener, 6-0, and posted a 10-1 win in the nine-inning nightcap.
Vail's no-hitter is the 11th individual no-hitter in the program's history and the first since then-freshman (and classmate)
Ryan Murphy on April 15, 2018. Vail is the first to throw a no-hitter at home since then-sophomore Cory Nelson on May 2, 2009.
The Dolphins scored the only runs they would need on a pair of hits in the second inning. After senior third baseman/first baseman
Derrick Miller (Westernville, N.Y./Rome Free Academy/Hudson Valley C.C.) singled to right field and an out, sophomore second baseman
Zach Brush (New York Mills, N.Y./Utica Notre Dame) homered to left center for his first career home run.
Le Moyne added three runs on two hits in the fourth inning. Junior first baseman
Andrew Roden (Sherrill, N.Y./Vernon-Verona-Sherrill/UMass Lowell) led off with a walk and moved to second on a one-out single by Miller. Junior designated hitter
Ty Syta (Hamburg, N.Y./St. Francis) followed with home run to left center for 5-0 lead.
The Dolphins completed game's scoring with a run in the sixth. Miller led off with a triple to center field and scored on a two-out single up the middle by junior shortstop
Drew Carroll (Clifton Park, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy (Albany)).
Vail struck out a career-high 12 batters in the contest and faced just one batter over the minimum as one walked with two outs in the second. Of Le Moyne's last seven no-hitters, Vail's 12 strikeouts are the most. Miller finished the contest going 3-for-3 with three runs scored, while Carroll and graduate student centerfielder
Justin Tuey (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) each had two hits. Frankie Pizzo took the loss for the Golden Knights after allowing five runs over five innings.
In the nightcap, the Golden Knights scored first as first baseman Jack McDonald homered to right field on the third pitch of the fourth inning.
Le Moyne took control of the game with five runs on four hits in the bottom of the fifth. After Miller doubled down the left field line to start the frame and an out, senior catcher
Nick Hansen (Troy, N.Y./La Salle Institute/Hudson Valley C.C.) launched a home run to left field for a 2-1 lead. Following a walk by Brush and a single by Carroll, Tuey blasted a three-run homer to right center.
The Dolphins continued to use the long ball to add five more runs in the bottom of the sixth. With one out, Miller drilled a home run to left center. Syta followed with a double to left and then Hansen singled to left. After an out, Carroll smacked a three-run home run to left field. Tuey then homered to right field for a 10-1 lead.
Junior
Jacob Maser (Chittenango, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy (Syracuse)) earned the win on the mound after striking out eight over five innings, while yielding one run and four hits. Tuey, Miller, Syta, Hansen and Carroll each tallied two hits in the game. Jared Restmeyer suffered the loss after giving up five runs over four and one-third innings.
Le Moyne (5-1, 5-1 NE10) continues its homestand with a doubleheader against Adelphi University on Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
