BASEBALL SPLITS DOUBLEHEADER WITH ADELPHI, 4-7, 6-1, IN BATTLE FOR FIRST PLACE

Syracuse, N.Y. – Junior Andrew Roden (Sherrill, N.Y./Vernon-Verona-Sherrill/UMass-Lowell) tossed six quality innings to lead the Le Moyne College baseball team to a 6-1 win over Adelphi University in the second game of a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Dick Rockwell Field. The Panthers won the opening game of the day, 7-4.

The Dolphins scored the only runs they would need in the nightcap with three runs in the bottom of the second. Junior shortstop Drew Carroll (Clifton Park, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy (Albany)) drew a walk with one out and then stole second base. After sophomore second baseman Zach Brush (New York Mills, N.Y./Utica Notre Dame) walked, he and Carroll stole second and third, respectively. Senior catcher Drew Fureno (Canajoharie, N.Y./Fort Plain) followed with a single through the left side to drive in Carroll. Graduate student center fielder Justin Tuey (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) then singled up the middle to knock in Brush and send Fureno around to third. Senior left fielder Jeff Wilson (Rochester, N.Y./Greece-Odyssey) followed with a sacrifice fly to center to plate Fureno.

Le Moyne recorded a pair of runs in the third on three hits and an Adelphi fielding error. Junior first baseman/designated hitter Ty Syta (Hamburg, N.Y./St. Francis) led off with a double and senior designated hitter Nick Hansen (Troy, N.Y./La Salle Institute/Hudson Valley C.C.) drew a walk two batters later. Carroll then reached on a fielding error by the third baseman to load the bases. Brush followed with a single to the second baseman to drive in Syta and force a pitching change. Fureno then beat out a grounder to the shortstop to plate Hansen.

Adelphi got on the scoreboard with a run without a hit in the fourth. Third baseman Matt Alifano and catcher/designated hitter Brandon Warick were hit by pitches in consecutive at-bats with one out and then Alifano stole third. Designated hitter/first baseman Michael Draskin followed with a sacrifice fly to right to drive in Alifano.

Le Moyne got the run back in the fourth on just one hit. Wilson and senior right fielder Nick Spinella (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) drew back-to-back walks to start the inning, but Wilson was retired on a double play. After Spinella took second on a wild pitch, he came around to score on a single through the left side by senior Derrick Miller (Westernville, N.Y./Rome Free Academy/Hudson Valley C.C.).

Roden struck out four over his six innings on the mound, while yielding just three hits and one run, to earn his second win in as many starts. Fureno was the only Dolphin with multiple hits, while also driving in two runs. Josh Rovner took the loss after allowing five runs over two and one-third innings.

In the opener, the Panthers exploded for six runs on six hits in the second inning. Warick led off with a single to left center, right fielder Tim Feliz singled through the right side and then Draskin singled to right field to load the bases. After an infield fly, center fielder Cooper Johnson blasted a grand slam down the right field line. Following a ground out, shortstop Tyler Becker singled to left field and then stole second. After an infield single to the left side by catcher/first baseman Jack Ryan and a walk by Alifano to load the bases again, Warick was hit by a pitch to force in Becker. Ryan then scored on a balk.

The Panthers added a seventh run in the seventh inning without getting a hit. Johnson walked to start the frame, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and then scored as Ryan reached on a fielding error by the third baseman.

Le Moyne struck for four runs in the bottom of the seventh. Wilson drew a walk to start the inning, stole second and then scored on a double to left field by senior right fielder Michael Smith (Montebello, N.Y./Suffern). After a single to center by Syta and a walk by Miller to force the second pitching change of the inning, Roden reached on a fielder's choice to drive in Smith. Carroll then doubled down the right field line to plate Syta. Brush followed with a single to the right side to knock Roden.

Sophomore Sam DiGeorge (Canastota, N.Y./Canastota) was tagged with the loss after allowing six runs over three innings, while striking out six. Smith, Syta, Roden and Brush each recorded two hits in the contest. Nicolas Luc earned his second win of the year after striking out seven over five scoreless innings.

Le Moyne (6-2, 6-2 NE10), which maintains a 1.5 game lead over the Panthers for first place in the Southwest Division, concludes the series with the Panthers on Sunday. The seven-inning first game gets underway at 12:00 p.m. with a nine-inning contest to follow.
