BASEBALL INCREASES DIVISIONAL LEAD WITH SWEEP OF ADELPHI, 5-4, 16-7

Syracuse, N.Y. – Junior shortstop Drew Carroll (Clifton Park, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy (Albany)) scored the winning run in the opener and scored three times in the nightcap to lead the Le Moyne College baseball team to a sweep of a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Dick Rockwell Field. The Dolphins won the seven-inning opener, 5-4, and claimed the nine-inning nightcap, 16-7.

The Dolphins took the lead in the opener with a run in the second inning on two hits. Junior first baseman Andrew Roden (Sherrill, N.Y./Vernon-Verona-Sherrill/UMass Lowell) led off with a single down the left field line and then stole second base. After a single to the shortstop by Carroll and a walk by senior left fielder Jeff Wilson (Rochester, N.Y./Greece-Odyssey) to load the bases, Roden scored on a double play.

Le Moyne scored twice in the third inning on a pair of hits. Sophomore second baseman Zach Brush (New York Mills, N.Y./Utica Notre Dame) drew a walk to open the frame, stole second, took third on a single to center by senior right fielder Nick Hansen (Troy, N.Y./La Salle Institute/Hudson Valley C.C.) and scored on a wild pitch. After a pair of outs, Hansen scored from second on a single up the middle by Roden.

Adelphi evened the score at three apiece in the fifth on two hits and a Le Moyne error. Second baseman Nicholas Siano led off with a single to right field and advanced to second on a throwing error by the right fielder as third baseman Matt Alifano reached on a fielder's choice. After an out and a walk by catcher/first baseman Jack Ryan to load the bases, designated hitter/catcher Brandon Warick lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to drive in Siano. First baseman/designated hitter Michael Draskin followed with a double to right center to knock in Alifano and Ryan.

The Panthers took the lead with a run on two hits in the sixth. Left fielder Jason Romero singled through the right side with one out and was replaced at first by pinch-runner Nick Gavilla. After Siano walked, Alifano doubled down the right field line to plate Gavilla with the go-ahead run.

The Dolphins answered back with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Roden led off with a single to center and Carroll followed with a single up the middle to force a pitching change. After a sacrifice bunt, senior catcher Drew Fureno (Canajoharie, N.Y./Fort Plain) singled to right field to drive in Roden. Carroll then raced home on a wild pitch with the winning run.

Sophomore righty Jacob Marshall (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) earned his first career victory after recording the final five outs of the game, including three via strikeout. Roden finished the contest with three hits and two runs, while Carroll had a pair of hits. Kevin Glasser took the loss after giving up two runs over two innings out of the bullpen.

Le Moyne opened the scoring in the nightcap with two runs in the first inning. Brush singled through the right side with one out and then stole second. After Hansen walked, junior designated hitter Ty Syta (Hamburg, N.Y./St. Francis) reached on a dropped fly ball by the shortstop to load the bases. Brush then raced home on wild pitch and Hansen then scored on a sacrifice fly to center by senior third baseman/first baseman Derrick Miller (Westernville, N.Y./Rome Free Academy/Hudson Valley C.C.).

The Dolphins blew the game open with eight runs in the fourth on five hits and an Adelphi error. Carroll led off with a single, moved to second on a wild pitch, took third on a fly out and scored on a single up the middle by Fureno. Following a single by graduate student center fielder Justin Tuey (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston), Brush singled to center to drive in Fureno and force a pitching change. Hansen then doubled down the left field line to plate Tuey and Brush. Hansen then raced all the way around from second on a groundout by Syta for a 7-0 lead. Miller was then hit by a pitch and Roden and Carroll drew walks to load the bases. Wilson then reached on an error by the third baseman, which allowed Miller and Roden to score. Carroll completed the inning's scoring by racing home on a wild pitch.

Adelphi cut into its deficit with four runs in the top of the seventh. Pinch-hitter/shortstop Alex Rende led off with a single to center and then left fielder Anthony Foti drew a walk. After a groundout, Rende scored on a groundout by second baseman Nick Lopez. Alifano then singled to the shortstop, who threw the ball wide, which allowed Gavilla to score. Right fielder Tim Feliz followed by smacking a home run to right center to force a pitching change.

Le Moyne answered with five runs in the bottom of the inning. Senior center fielder Nick Spinella (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse), freshman second baseman Jason Boule (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy (Syracuse)) and Hansen drew consecutive walks to start the frame. Spinella then scored as Syta reached on a fielder's choice. Miller followed with a single to left to drive in Boule. After a pitching change and an out, Carroll homered to right center for a 15-4 lead.

Each team scored once in the eighth inning. Romano led off with a single up the middle and moved to second on a groundout. After another out, Foti singled to third base. Pinch-hitter/center fielder Dillon Kim then singled to center to knock in Romano.

Freshman catcher Brady Fureno (Canajoharie, N.Y./Fort Plain) led off the eighth for the Dolphins with a single to center, moved to third on a double to left by Spinella and scored on a groundout by Boule.

Adelphi finished off the game's scoring with two runs in the ninth. Pinch-hitter Vincent Iannuzzi and first baseman Ryan Picarello recorded singles to start the inning. After an out and catcher Jose Matos reaching on an error to load the bases, Rende singled to center to drive in Iannuzzi. Picarello then scored on a groundout by Foti.

Junior Jacob Maser (Chittenango, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy (Syracuse)) earned his second win after striking out six over six and two-thirds innings, while yielding four runs. Brush, Miller and Carroll each had two hits, while Carroll scored three times and Brush and Miller each crossed the plate twice. Troy Simpson allowed six runs (four earned) and seven hits over three and one-third innings to take the loss.

Le Moyne (8-2, 8-2 NE10) finishes off its four-game series with American International College with a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon in Springfield, Mass. at 1:00 p.m.
