BASEBALL SPLITS WITH AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL, 5-2, 2-13

Springfield, Mass. – Sophomore righty Sam DiGeorge (Canastota, N.Y./Canastota) pitched into the seventh inning to lead the Le Moyne College baseball team to a 5-2 victory over American International College in the first game of a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader on Thursday afternoon at Bedard Field. The Yellow Jackets won the nightcap, 13-2.

Le Moyne opened the scoring on the day with a run in the top of the third on a pair of hits. Graduate student center fielder Justin Tuey (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) walked with one out, moved to second on a single by junior shortstop Drew Carroll (Clifton Park, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy (Syracuse)) and scored on a single by junior designated hitter Ty Syta (Hamburg, N.Y./St. Francis).

The Yellow Jackets evened the score in the bottom of the frame. Second baseman Cam Defeo led off with a walk, moved to second on a single by third baseman Dalton Quinn, took third on a passed ball and scored on a groundout by shortstop Angel Mendez.

The Dolphins regained the lead in the fourth with one hit. Junior first baseman Andrew Roden (Sherrill, N.Y./Vernon-Verona-Sherrill/UMass Lowell) led off with a single through the right side, moved to second on catcher's interference, took third on a hit batsman and scored on a sacrifice fly to right center by Tuey.

AIC answered back in the bottom of the inning. First baseman Matt Costanza reached on a fielding error by the second baseman with one out, advanced to second on a bunt single by center fielder/pitcher Brandon Gaul and scored as Defeo reached on a dropped fly ball by the right fielder.

Le Moyne took the lead for good in the top of the fifth. Syta led off with a single to right center, moved to second as senior left fielder Jeff Wilson (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Odyssey) reached on a fielding error by the third baseman and advanced to third on a walk by senior third baseman Derrick Miller (Westernville, N.Y./Rome Free Academy/Hudson Valley C.C.). After a double play in which Syta was retired at the plate and a walk to load the bases again, senior right fielder Nick Spinella (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) drew a walk to force in Wilson.

The Dolphins tacked on two runs in the top of the sixth. Tuey doubled down the right field line to open the frame and came around to score as Carroll reached on a throwing error by the catcher on a sacrifice bunt attempt. After an out, Wilson singled through the right side to plate Carroll.

DiGeorge improved to 2-1 on the year after tossing six and one-third innings, while yielding just two unearned runs and two hits, while striking out one. Sophomore righty Jacob Marshall (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) retired both batters he faced with runners on the corners to earn his first career save. Syta finished with three of the team's eight hits, while Roden had a pair of hits. Joe Pepe took the loss after allowing five runs (one earned) over five-plus innings, while striking out seven.

Le Moyne (9-3, 9-3 NE10), which maintains a first-place lead in the Southwest Division, returns to action on Saturday at Pace University at 1:00 p.m.
