BASEBALL TOPS PACE, 7-2, IN GAME TWO TO EARN DOUBLEHEADER SPLIT

Pleasantville, N.Y. – Junior righty Jacob Maser (Chittenango, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy (Syracuse)) tossed his first career complete game to lead the Le Moyne College baseball team to a 7-2 win over Pace University in the second game of a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Finnerty Field. Pace won the opener, 13-2.

The Dolphins started the scoring in the nightcap with a run in the second inning. Senior third baseman Derrick Miller (Westernville, N.Y./Rome Free Academy/Hudson Valley C.C.) drew a walk to open the inning, moved to second on a balk with one out and came around to score on a double to left center by junior first baseman Andrew Roden (Sherrill, N.Y./Vernon-Verona-Sherrill/UMass Lowell).

Le Moyne doubled its lead with a run in the fourth inning on two hits. Junior shortstop Nick Nevins (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham), who returned to the lineup in game one after an eight-game absence, led off with a single to right field, stole second with one out, moved to third on a single by Roden and scored on a sacrifice fly to center by junior second baseman Drew Carroll (Clifton Park, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy (Albany)).

The Dolphins pushed their lead to 4-0 with two runs in the top of the sixth. Miller made it 3-0 with a home run to lead off the inning. Senior left fielder Jeff Wilson (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Odyssey) then reached on an error by the third baseman, took second on a walk by Roden, moved to third on an infield single by Carroll and then scored on a sacrifice fly to center by freshman designated hitter Brady Fureno (Canajoharie, N.Y./Fort Plain).

Pace got on the scoreboard with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth. After a single up the middle by center fielder Matt Bass and a groundout, right fielder Matt Almonte smacked a home run.

Le Moyne finished off the game's scoring with three runs in the seventh. Senior Nick Hansen (Troy, N.Y./La Salle Institute/Hudson Valley C.C.) drew a walk to start the inning, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and took third on a balk. After an intentional walk to Miller, Wilson tripled to right field to plate Hansen and Miller. Following an out, Carroll reached on an error by the shortstop, which allowed Wilson to score.

Maser tied his career high with eight strikeouts en route to collecting his third straight win, while scattering just four hits over the seven innings, which came on just 78 pitches. Thomas Ippolito took the loss for the Setters after allowing four runs and seven hits over six innings.

In the opening game, Pace scored in each of the first seven innings. Bass led off the bottom of the first with a single to center, moved to second on a hit batsman, took third on a single by Almonte and scored on a double play.

With two outs in the second, left fielder Harrison Treble doubled down the left field line and came around to score on a single to center by catcher Andrew Primm.

Le Moyne cut its deficit in half with a run in the top of the third. Senior catcher Drew Fureno (Canajoharie, N.Y./Fort Plain) was hit by a pitch to start the frame, advanced to third on a one-out double by Hansen and scored on a sacrifice fly by Nevins.

Second baseman Johnny Guarantano drew a walk to lead off the third, moved to second on a single by Almonte and scored on a double to right by designated hitter Mitchell McCabe.

The Setters scored twice in the fourth inning. Primm was hit by a pitch, Bass walked and Almonte was intentionally walked with one out to load the bases. After Primm was retired at home, shortstop Dean DePreta doubled to plate Bass and Almonte.

Pace scored three times on four hits in the fifth. Third baseman Greg Tsouprakos doubled to start the frame and came around to score on a double by Treble. Primm followed with a single to left center to knock in Treble. After a groundout, Guarantano singled to right to drive in Primm.

The Setters scored three more runs in the sixth on two hits. After DePreta walked with one out and first baseman Miles Kelly singled, Treble launched a two-out home run to right field for an 11-1 lead.

Fureno homered to left field with one out in the top of the seventh for Le Moyne's second run of the game.

After Guarantano tripled to right field to open the seventh, Almonte smacked a home run to complete the game's scoring.

Senior southpaw Joe Vail (Cromwell, Conn./Xavier) took the loss for the Dolphins after allowing five runs over four innings, while striking out six. Hansen and Miller each had two of Le Moyne's six hits. Christian Aich improved to 4-0 after striking out seven and yielding just one run over six innings.

Le Moyne (10-4, 10-4 NE10) concludes the four-game series with the Setters on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
