Pleasantville, N.Y. – Senior catcher
Drew Fureno (Canajoharie, N.Y./Fort Plain) homered twice to lead the Le Moyne College baseball team to a 9-4 win in seven innings over Pace University in the first game of a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Finnerty Field. The Setters rallied for a 5-4 win in 11 innings in the nightcap.
The Dolphins opened the scoring in the first game in the third inning on a Fureno's first home run of the season to lead off the frame.
Le Moyne doubled its lead the next inning. Junior designated hitter
Ty Syta (Hamburg, N.Y./St. Francis) led off with a double to right, moved to third on a fly out and scored on a wild pitch.
The Dolphins scored four times in the fifth on three hits and a Pace error. Fureno led off with a single to left, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and took third on a wild pitch. Following a walk by senior right fielder
Nick Hansen (Troy, N.Y./La Salle Institute/Hudson Valley C.C.), junior shortstop
Nick Nevins (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) reached on a bunt single to drive in Fureno. Senior first baseman/third baseman
Derrick Miller (Westernville, N.Y./Rome Free Academy/Hudson Valley C.C.) followed with a double to left to knock in Hansen. Syta then reached on an error by the first baseman, which allowed Nevins to score. Senior left fielder
Jeff Wilson (Rochester, N.Y./Greece-Odyssey) then reached on a fielder's choice to drive in Miller.
Pace got on the scoreboard in the fifth with two runs on three hits. Catcher Andrew Primm led off with a triple to right center and scored on a double to right by third baseman Greg Tsouprakos. Following an out, center fielder Matt Bass singled to right to plate Tsouprakos.
Le Moyne got one of the runs back in the sixth. Sophomore second baseman
Zach Brush (New York Mills, N.Y./Utica Notre Dame) led off with a bunt single to the left side and was replaced at first by freshman pinch-runner
Jason Boule (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy (Syracuse)). After an out, graduate student center fielder
Justin Tuey (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) singled through the right side to move Boule to third. Hansen then reached on an error by the shortstop, which allowed Boule to score.
The Setters scored two more runs in the sixth on three hits. First baseman Nate Carminucci drew a walk to start the frame, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a double to right center by left fielder Mitchell McCabe. Following a pitching change and a strikeout, Primm singled through the right side to knock in McCabe.
The Dolphins completed the game's scoring with a pair of runs in the seventh. After Boule walked with two outs, Fureno homered off the foul pole in left field for a 9-4 lead.
Junior
Andrew Roden (Sherrill, N.Y./Vernon-Verona-Sherrill/UMass Lowell) struck out five over five-plus innings to earn his third win of the season. Fureno led Le Moyne's 11-hit attack with three hits to go along with three runs scored and three RBI, while Tuey and Nevins each had two hits. Michael Roll allowed six runs over four and one-third innings to suffer the loss.
In the nightcap, the Setters scored first with a run in the third. Second baseman Andrew Oakland reached on an error by the second baseman to open the frame, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, took third on a wild pitch and scored on a single up the middle by Primm.
Le Moyne evened the score at one apiece in the fifth. Junior third baseman/second baseman
Drew Carroll (Clifton Park, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy (Albany)) doubled to left field with two outs and came around to score on a single to right by Fureno.
The Dolphins took the lead in the seventh with a pair of runs. Wilson led off with a single up the middle, stole second and took third on a wild pitch. Roden followed with a single off the pitcher and then Carroll walked to load the bases. After Wilson was retired at home on a groundout, Roden and Carroll both scored on a groundout to second.
Le Moyne added a run in the eighth as Syta launched a home run to right.
Pace started its comeback with a run in the bottom of the eighth. Treble doubled up the middle with one out, moved to third on a single by Primm and scored on a groundout by Almonte.
The Setters forced extras with two runs in the ninth. Kelly drew a walk with one out, moved to second on a single through the right side by Carminucci and took third on a single by pinch-hitter Thomas Keefe to load the bases. After a strikeout, Treble singled up the middle to knock in Kelly and pinch-runner Kasey Sullivan.
Pace walked off with the victory with a run in the 11th. Kelly led off with a single to the hole between second and third and then advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches. Guarantano followed with a sacrifice fly down the right field line to drive in Kelly.
Junior lefty
Ryan DuBord (Old Saybrook, Conn./Old Saybrook) took the loss after yielding one run over one and one-third innings, while striking out two. Frankie Giuliano picked up the win after striking out four of the six batters he faced.
Le Moyne (11-5, 11-5 NE10) returns to the diamond on Wednesday, May 5 at the University of New Haven for a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m.
