BASEBALL SPLITS WITH SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT STATE ON “SENIOR DAY”, 3-6, 8-0

Syracuse, N.Y. – Sophomore righty Sam DiGeorge (Canastota, N.Y./Canastota) tossed his first career shutout to lead the Le Moyne College baseball team to an 8-0 win over Southern Connecticut State University in the second game of a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader on Friday afternoon at Dick Rockwell Field. The Owls won the opener, 6-3.

The Dolphins scored the only run they would need in the nightcap without getting a hit. Junior second baseman Drew Carroll (Clifton Park, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy (Albany)) drew a walk with one out and then stole second. He then stole third and raced home on a throwing error by the catcher on the attempt.

Le Moyne plated three runs in the second on three hits to take a 4-0 lead. Junior first baseman Andrew Roden (Sherrill, N.Y./Vernon-Verona-Sherrill/UMass Lowell) led off with a double to center and moved to third base on a one-out wild pitch. Senior left fielder Jeff Wilson (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Odyssey) then doubled to right field to drive in Roden. Senior right fielder Nick Spinella (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) followed with his first career home run to right field.

The Dolphins doubled their lead with four runs on three hits in the fifth inning. Senior catcher Drew Fureno (Canajoharie, N.Y./Fort Plain) led off with a walk and moved around to third on a pair of wild pitches. Graduate student center fielder Justin Tuey (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) followed with a double down the right field line to plate Fureno and force a pitching change. Carroll then singled and stole second and junior shortstop Nick Nevins (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) followed with a walk to load the bases. After a pop out, Tuey raced home on a wild pitch. Roden then knocked in Carroll with a groundout to second. Nevins completed the game's scoring by crossing the plate on a single to right by junior designated hitter Ty Syta (Hamburg, N.Y./St. Francis).

DiGeorge registered five strikeouts to collect his first career shutout and complete game, while improving to 3-1 on the season. Mike Sztuma took the loss after allowing six runs (five earned) over four-plus innings.

In the opening game, the Dolphins scored first with a run in the second inning on two hits. Roden led off with a single through the right side and stole second with one out. Following a walk by Spinella and an out, Tuey singled through the right side to drive in Roden.

Southern Connecticut State took the lead with two runs on one hit and a Le Moyne error in the fourth. Center fielder Andrew Eng reached on a throwing error by the pitcher to start the frame and moved to second on a single by third baseman Mike Ferrett. After a walk by first baseman Jack Drewry to load the bases, left fielder Izaiah Walker lifted a sacrifice fly to center to knock in Eng. Ferrett then scored on a wild pitch.

The Dolphins evened the score at two apiece in the bottom of the inning. Fureno was hit by a pitch with two outs and then Tuey, Carroll and Nevins drew consecutive walks to force in Fureno.

The Owls took the lead for good with three runs in the fifth on just one hit. Second baseman Anthony Zambito drew a walk to open the inning. After a Le Moyne pitching change and a walk by right fielder Peyton Farina, Eng doubled to right field to drive in Zambito. After an out, Farina came in to score on a wild pitch. Eng then scored on a groundout for a 5-2 lead.

After leaving the bases loaded in the sixth, the Dolphins scored a run in the seventh. Roden drew a walk to start the inning, stole second and took third on a groundout. After a line out, Fureno singled to the shortstop to plate Roden.

Southern Connecticut State tacked on an insurance run in the ninth. Pinch-hitter Mike DeMartino led off with a single up the middle and was replaced at first by pinch-runner/pitcher Tom Hughes, who moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and took third on a single by Zambito. After Hughes was retired at home on a fielder's choice and Eng was intentionally walked to load the bases, Zambito scored as Ferrett reached on a fielding error by the first baseman.

Senior southpaw Joe Vail (Cromwell, Conn./Xavier) suffered the loss after allowing three runs (two earned) over four-plus innings, while striking out four. Spencer Fox earned his second win of the season after striking out three over two and one-third innings pitched out of the bullpen, while yielding one run. Hughes earned his third save of the year after retiring all three batters he faced in the ninth.

Le Moyne (12-6) and the Owls close out the regular season on Saturday with another doubleheader at 12:00 p.m. The Dolphins enter the final day in first place in the Southwest Division by a half-game over Adelphi University. The Dolphins will win the division (and a first round bye) by equaling or doing better than what Adelphi does in its doubleheader with Pace on Saturday. Both doubleheaders begin at 12:00.
