Garden City, N.Y. – Ally Muller tossed 11 scoreless innings to lead Adelphi University to a doubleheader sweep of the Le Moyne College softball team on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action at Janet L. Ficke Field. The Panthers won the opener, 1-0, and rallied in the seventh inning to take the nightcap, 3-2.
Adelphi scored the only run it would need in the opener on a pair of hits in the fourth inning. Center fielder Sophia Cicchetti led off with a bunt single and moved to second on a passed ball. After taking third on a single by first baseman Faith Camilleri, Cicchetti scored on a sacrifice fly to right by right fielder Kendall Winn.
Redshirt freshman
Laura Bennett (Corning, N.Y./Corning-Painted Post) suffered her third straight loss after allowing just the one run over six innings, while striking out five. Muller earned the victory for the Panthers after striking out 10 over seven innings, while yielding just three hits and a walk.
Le Moyne struck first in the nightcap with two runs on one hit in the first inning. Sophomore center fielder
Dominique Russo (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) led off with a single to the shortstop and then senior shortstop
Kaily LaForce (Binghamton, N.Y./Binghamton) drew a nine-pitch walk. After a wild pitch moved the runners up a base, junior catcher/designated player
Cassidy Barrett (Apalachin, N.Y./Vestal) reached on a fielder's choice, but Russo was thrown out at home. Senior catcher
Olivia Littman (Newfane, N.Y./Newfane) then drove in LaForce by reaching on a fielder's choice. Barrett then scored as freshman second baseman
Brooke Nicolaos (Liverpool, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) reached on a fielder's choice.
Adelphi cut its deficit in half with a run in the third on two hits. Winn led off with a double down the left field line and moved to third on a one-out single to right center by shortstop Amanda Owens. Second baseman Emily Whitman followed with a sacrifice fly to right field to drive in Winn.
The Panthers won the game with two runs on three hits in the seventh. Cicchetti led off with a double to left center and advanced to third on a single to right by Camilleri, which forced a pitching change. Catcher Hannah Pineda smacked the second pitch into center to drive in Cicchetti and pinch-runner Jaden Farhat with the winning runs.
Senior
Lauren Nichols (Syracuse, N.Y./Solvay) suffered the loss after allowing three runs over six-plus innings, while striking out one. Bennett was charged with a blown save after allowing a hit to the only batter she faced. Muller improved to 10-2 on the season after striking out five over four scoreless innings of relief.
