Springfield, Mass. – Senior
Joe Vail (Cromwell, Conn./Xavier) struck out seven to lead the Le Moyne College baseball team to a 10-4 win over American International College in the first game of a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at Bedard Field. The Yellow Jackets recorded a 3-1 win in the nightcap.
American International started the game's scoring with a run in the second inning. With two outs, designated hitter Alejandro Mosquera smacked a solo home run to right field.
The Dolphins answered back with a run in the top of the third. After second baseman
Drew Carroll (Clifton Park, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy (Albany)) tripled to right center to start the inning, senior catcher
Drew Fureno (Canajoharie, N.Y./Fort Plain) doubled down the left field line to plate Carroll.
Le Moyne took control of the game with two runs in each of the fifth through eighth innings. In the fifth, Carroll drew a walk to open the frame and moved to second as Fureno reached on a fielding error by the center fielder. Following a fly out, junior shortstop
Nick Nevins (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) doubled to center to knock in Carroll. Following an out, the next batter struck out, but the ball got away from the catcher, which allowed Fureno to race home.
Senior third baseman
Derrick Miller (Westernville, N.Y./Rome Free Academy/Hudson Valley C.C.) led off with a walk, stole second with one out and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Carroll then singled through the right side to knock in Miller. After Carroll stole second and third, Fureno plated him with a single up the middle.
Junior first baseman
Andrew Roden (Sherrill, N.Y./Vernon-Verona-Sherrill/UMass Lowell) drew a walk with one out and moved to third as senior left fielder
Jeff Wilson (Rochester, N.Y./Greece-Odyssey) reached second on a fielding error by the center fielder. After a walk by senior designated hitter
Nick Hansen (Troy, N.Y./La Salle Institute/Hudson Valley C.C.) to load the base and a fly out, senior right fielder
Michael Smith (Montebello, N.Y./Suffern) singled to right field to knock in Roden and Wilson.
Le Moyne completed the run with two runs in the eighth. Graduate student center fielder
Justin Tuey (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) singed to center with one out and Nevins followed with a double. After a groundout, Wilson singled to right field to knock in Tuey and Nevins.
The Yellow Jackets cut into their deficit with three runs in the bottom of the eighth. After third baseman Dalton Quinn walked and left fielder Michael Cruz was hit by a pitch to open the inning, shortstop Angel Mendez singled to the right side to drive in Quinn. Following a walk by left fielder/right fielder Matt Krause to load the bases, Cruz scored as first baseman Matt Costanza reached on a fielder's choice.
The Dolphins closed out the game's scoring with a run in the ninth. Smith doubled to right center with one out moved to third on a fly out and scored on a passed ball.
Vail allowed jus three hits and one run over six innings, while striking out the seven batters, to earn his seventh career victory. Carroll, Fureno, Nevins and Smith each recorded two hits in the contest, while Carroll scored three times. Joe Kemlage suffered the loss after allowing three runs (two earned) over five innings, while striking out 11.
In the nightcap, American International scored the only runs it would need with three runs on four hits in the bottom of the third. Quinn led off with a home run to left field to start the scoring. Cruz followed with a single and then Mendez doubled down the left field line. After an out, Costanza singled to center field to drive in Cruz and Mendez.
Le Moyne broke through in the top of the sixth, but was unable to tie the score the tying run. Miller led off with a single through the left side and advanced to third on a throwing error by the shortstop following a line out. Nevins then doubled down the left field line to plate Miller. After a strikeout, Wilson singled to put runners at the corners with two outs, but the next batter flied out to end the rally.
Junior
Jacob Maser (Chittenango, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy (Syracuse)) took the loss after yielding three runs over three innings, while striking out seven. Joe Pepe earned the win after tossing three scoreless innings. Jay Chiappetta collected a save after pitching the final four innings.
Le Moyne (1-1, 1-1 NE10) opens its home schedule on Saturday with a doubleheader against The College of Saint Rose at 1:00 p.m.
