Syracuse, N.Y. – Junior first baseman
Andrew Roden (Sherrill, N.Y./Vernon-Verona-Sherrill/UMass Lowell) drove in a pair of runs to lead the Le Moyne College baseball team to a 5-3 victory over the University of New Haven in the quarterfinals of the Northeast-10 Conference Championships on Thursday afternoon at Dick Rockwell Field.
With the victory, the Dolphins advance to the best-of-three NE10 Championship semifinals (aka Southwest Division finals) on Sunday at top-seeded Adelphi University. The Dolphins and Panthers will play a doubleheader on Sunday and the third game, if it is needed, on Monday.
The Dolphins opened the game's scoring with a run in the first inning. After junior shortstop
Nick Nevins (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) and senior third baseman
Derrick Miller (Westernville, N.Y./Rome Free Academy/Hudson Valley C.C.) drew back-to-back two-out walks, Roden laced a single through the left side to plate Nevins.
Le Moyne doubled its lead with a run in the bottom of the third. Junior second baseman
Drew Carroll (Clifton Park, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy (Albany)) singled to left field with one out and then stole second. After a Nevins walk and a fly out, Roden greeted a new pitcher with a single up the middle to plate Carroll.
New Haven got on the scoreboard with an unearned run in the fourth. Center fielder Tyler Wells led off with a double to left and then first baseman Andrew Bianco drew a walk. Following a foul out, Wells scored on a throwing error by the second baseman as left fielder Dylan Chiaro fouled out to the right fielder.
The Dolphins answered back with two runs in the bottom of the frame. After senior right fielder
Nick Hansen (Troy, N.Y./La Salle Institute/Hudson Valley C.C.) reached second on a throwing error by the third baseman with one out, senior catcher
Drew Fureno (Canajoharie, N.Y./Fort Plain) doubled down the left field line to plate Hansen. Following a groundout, Carroll singled to left field to knock in Fureno.
The Chargers cut into their deficit with a run in the sixth. Bianco led off with a walk, stole second with one out, took third on a wild pitch and scored on a single up the middle by Chiaro.
Le Moyne pushed its lead to 5-2 in the seventh as Miller homered to center field with one out.
New Haven scored once and then loaded the bases in the top of the ninth with one out, but could not cut into its deficit further. Third baseman Billy Huber doubled down the left field line with one out and moved to third on a wild pitch. Second baseman Jack Reardon followed with a single through the right side to drive in Huber and force a pitching change. After a walk and a single by Wells to load the bases, the next two batters struck out swinging to end the game.
Junior righty
Jacob Maser (Chittenango, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy (Syracuse)) struck out six over six innings, while yielding three hits and two runs (one earned), to improve to 4-2 on the season. Sophomore
Jacob Marshall (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) struck out the final two batters of the game to earn his second save of the year. Carroll joined Roden in posting two hits, while also stealing two bases. Andrew Cain took the loss for the Chargers after allowing two runs over two and two-thirds innings.
