BASEBALL SPLITS FIRST TWO GAMES OF NE10 DIVISIONAL FINAL WITH ADELPHI, 4-6, 9-4

Garden City, N.Y. – Freshman righty Max Parker (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) pitched into the seventh inning for the second straight start to lead the Le Moyne College baseball team to a 9-4 win over Adelphi University in the second game of the best-of-three Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Divisional final on Sunday afternoon at Bonomo Memorial Field. The Panthers took a 1-0 lead in the final with a 6-4 come-from-behind win in the first game.

The teams will play the deciding third game of the series on Monday at 2:30 p.m. with the Panthers serving as the home team after each team won as the home team on Sunday.

The Dolphins started the scoring in the nightcap with two runs in the fourth inning on three hits and two Adelphi errors. Junior pitcher/first baseman Andrew Roden (Sherrill, N.Y./Vernon-Verona-Sherrill/UMass Lowell) led off with a single and advanced around to third on a throwing error by the pitcher on a pickoff attempt. Junior designated hitter/first baseman Ty Syta (Hamburg, N.Y./St. Francis) followed with a single through the right side to plate Roden. After a fly out, a single up the middle by senior right fielder Nick Hansen (Troy, N.Y./La Salle Institute/Hudson Valley C.C.) and a groundout, graduate student center fielder Justin Tuey (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) reached on a fielding error by the shortstop, which allowed Hansen to score.

Le Moyne scored twice more in the fifth on two hits and an Adelphi error. Senior third baseman Derrick Miller (Westernville, N.Y./Rome Free Academy/Hudson Valley C.C.) led off the inning with a single to left and took second on a fielding error by the left fielder. After a walk and stolen base by Roden, Syta grounded out to drive in Miller. Senior left fielder Jeff Wilson (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Odyssey) followed with a single through the left side to drive in Roden.

Adelphi plated a run in the sixth on two hits. Third baseman Matt Alifano led off with a triple to center and scored on a single through the left side by catcher Jack Ryan.

The Dolphins extended their lead to 7-1 with three runs on two hits in the bottom of the sixth. Junior second baseman Drew Carroll (Clifton Park, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy (Albany)) doubled to left center with one out to force a pitching change. After junior shortstop Nick Nevins (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) was hit by a pitch, Miller doubled down the right field line to drive in Carroll and Nevins. Following two more hit batsman to load the bases, Wilson grounded out to drive in Miller.

The Panthers got the three runs back the next inning on four hits. Left fielder Kyle Olson and center fielder Cooper Johnson opened the inning with singles and then shortstop Tyler Becker singled to right to drive in Olson and force a pitching change. Second baseman Anthony Cipri followed with a sacrifice fly to center to drive in Johnson. Two batters later, right fielder Tim Feliz singled up the middle to knock in Becker, but was then caught stealing to end the inning.

Le Moyne tacked on two insurance runs on two hits in the eighth. Roden singled up the middle with one out, stole second and then took third on a balk. Syta then lifted a sac fly to left to drive in Roden. Following walks by Wilson and Hansen, senior catcher Drew Fureno (Canajoharie, N.Y./Fort Plain) singled through the left side to plate Wilson.

Parker improved to 2-0 after striking out three (against zero walks) over six-plus innings, while yielding four runs. Fureno finished with three hits, while Miller, Roden and Wilson each had two hits. Max Steele took the loss after allowing two runs (one earned) over three and one-third innings.
