Matt Hutchings (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) recorded seven points to lead the top-ranked and top-seeded Le Moyne College men's lacrosse team to an 11-7 win over eight-ranked and fifth-seeded Saint Anselm College in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championships on Sunday afternoon at Saxon Stadium on the campus of Mercyhurst University.
With the victory, the Dolphins advance to the NCAA Championship semifinals next Sunday back at Saxon Stadium against third-ranked and third-seeded Mercyhurst at 1:00 p.m. The Lakers advanced to the semifinals via no-contest due to NCAA health and safety protocols involving their scheduled opponent.
The Dolphins opened the game with the first four goals. Following 10 and one-half minutes of scoreless play to start the contest, junior midfielder
Colin Sypek (Lake Worth, Fla./American Heritage School (Delray Beach)) tallied his 12th goal of the season at the 4:28 mark off a pass from Hutchings. Just over one minute later, junior attackman
Kevin Sheehan (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) found the back of the net for the 20th time this season after taking a pass from graduate student attackman
Jake Nelson (Charlotte, N.C./Vestal (N.Y.)/Binghamton/Mercer/Syracuse). Sypek scored again with 1:52 remaining in the opening period after collecting a pass in an extra-man situation from Sheehan.
Hutchings put the Dolphins up 4-0 just 39 seconds into the second quarter with his 13th goal of the year.
Saint Anselm scored twice in a span of two minutes to cut its deficit in half. Jack Robinson got the Hawks on the scoreboard at the 11:59 mark off a pass from Noah Larsen. Matt Ward then scored in an extra-man opportunity after taking a feed from Robinson.
The teams then traded goals in a span of 13 seconds. Graduate student midfielder
Ross Filtch (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus/Siena) put the Dolphins back up by three with 7:46 until halftime off a pass from Hutchings, who passed Tyler Prevost '13 for sixth on the program's career assists list with his 75th career helper. Griffin Shoemaker answered back only 13 seconds later with his 25th goal of the season.
Le Moyne scored the next two goals to regain a four-goal advantage. Nelson found the back of the net for the 23rd time with 6:49 to go and Hutchings scored 60 seconds later after receiving a pass from Filtch.
Saint Anselm got within three for the final time with 3:37 left as Ryan Melley scored his 13th goal of the season.
Filtch completed the scoring in the half with his 20th goal of the campaign just 35 seconds later after taking a feed from Hutchings.
Senior midfielder
Ben McCreary (Cicero, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy (Syracuse)) started the scoring in the third quarter at the 6:42 mark with his 21st goal of the season.
Nick Larsen answered back 44 seconds later for the Hawks with his ninth tally of the year.
Le Moyne scored the final goal of the third quarter and first goal of the fourth quarter to take its largest lead of the game. Redshirt junior midfielder
Zach Pierce (Gansevoort, N.Y./Schuylerville/Onondaga C.C.) netted his fifth goal of the season with 2:25 left in the third off a dish from Hutchings for a 10-5 lead. Hutchings then made it 11-5 at the 10:23 mark of the fourth quarter with his 15th tally of the campaign.
The Hawks scored the final two goals of the game to deliver the final score. Jack Andrews scored in an extra-man situation with 6:31 left off a pass from Ryan Richards. Robinson then capped the scoring with an extra-man goal with 5:00 remaining.
Saint Anselm was only able to get off three shots over its final five possessions with the two being put on cage saved by redshirt junior goalkeeper
Frank Delia (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker/Onondaga C.C.).
Delia improved to 7-0 on the year after making a career-high 14 saves, including five in the scoreless first quarter. Senior defenseman
Nate Arnold (Macedon, N.Y./Palmyra-Macedon/Richmond) led the Dolphins with six ground balls, while senior short-stick defensive midfielder
Casey Nevins (Corning, N.Y./Corning-Painted Post) and sophomore defenseman
Nick Fraterrigo (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) each had two caused turnovers. CJ Hart turned away 15 shots, including seven in the third quarter, in the loss for the Hawks.
