Syracuse, N.Y. – Dolphins may be indigenous to water, but drivers in the greater Syracuse area have experienced the sleek marine mammals popping up along local roadways in recent days.
In an effort to commemorate the Le Moyne men's lacrosse team's sixth National Championship, the Dolphins' athletic department launched a regional billboard campaign in recent days. The initiative began last week touting Le Moyne's participation in the Division II National Championship game on Sunday. Following the Dolphins' 12-6 defeat of Lenoir-Rhyne in the NCAA final, messaging on the boards quickly flipped to celebrating the landmark win.
The two billboards, designed by Assistant AD for Compliance and Marketing
Jen Fabian '13, M '19, are visible in four locations: the intersections of Erie Boulevard and Thompson Road, Erie Boulevard and Smith Street and South Geddes Street and West Fayette Street as well as on Interstate 690 South 0.4 miles east of Midler Avenue
"Winning a National Championship in any sport, at any level is a massive accomplishment," said Athletic Director
Bob Beretta. "Doing so during these unprecedented times is even more significant. We are extremely proud of head coach
Dan Sheehan and the men in our lacrosse program. They sacrificed a great deal this past year just to be able to compete this spring. We couldn't be more excited for their tremendous achievement.
"We'd like to thank the entire Le Moyne community for the support it provided, placing our student-athletes in a position to compete this spring. We are so grateful for the trust and belief displayed by President (Linda) LeMura and the College's senior leadership team. The entire Le Moyne community played a large role in this championship and the billboard campaign is a small way we can thank everyone, while celebrating the phenomenal performance of our National Champions!"
The Dolphins used a 7-0 run over the first 25 minutes of the second half to turn a 5-5 halftime deadlock into a 12-5 advantage. Championship Most Outstanding Player Matt Hutchings led the Dolphins with six goals, the second-most by a Dolphin in the program's 10 national championship game appearances. Redshirt junior midfielder Zach Pierce registered seven points on two goals and five assists, the most by a Dolphin in a title game and tied for the most in an NCAA tournament game. Redshirt junior goalkeeper Frank Delia registered a career-best 15 saves, which is tied for the most by a Dolphin in an NCAA tournament game.
