NUNEZ EARNS 100TH CAREER VICTORY AS WOMEN'S TENNIS DEFEATS SNHU 5-2

Syracuse, N.Y. - The Le Moyne College women's tennis team defeated Southern New Hampshire University 5-2 in a Northeast-10 Conference dual match at Nottingham High School on Monday afternoon to improve to 5-0 on the year and 4-0 in conference action.

Graduate student Marta Nunez (Rye, N.Y./Antonio Lopez (Spain)) achieved her 100th career win during the doubles portion of the competition, defeating the Penmen duo of Alexxa Etienne and Guntra Upeniece with partner Fiona Pepper (Challapampa, Peru/Colegio Anglo Americano Prescott) 6-3 in the number two match. Nunez holds the record for most career singles match wins in Le Moyne history with 58, and is now tied for most career doubles wins in program history with 43. The Dolphins clinched the first point of the day after senior Birdem Oz (Istanbul, Turkey/Ted Ankara College Foundation HS) and junior Francesca Lilliegren (Guayaquil, Ecuador/Colegio Alemán Humboldt Guayaquil) bested Natalie Kallamunzerova and Magdalena Hubickova in the number one doubles match. The battle between Le Moyne's Isabella Barona (Manta, Ecuador/Talentos De Manta) and Brooke Fernandez (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd) and Southern New Hampshire's Isabella Andrade and Elizabeth Dwyer in the third doubles match went unfinished.

Le Moyne was able to win four out of the six singles matches. Kallmunzerova, who won the ITA East Region singles championship last weekend, got past Barona with a 6-2, 6-2 win in the number one singles match. Lilliegren earned the Dolphins a point with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Mina Houge in the fifth singles position. Oz defeated Hubickova 7-6 (7-5), 6-0 in the second singles spot and Fernandez took down Upeniece 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 in the number six singles position to clinch the match for Le Moyne. Nunez won a tough match against Etienne in the number three singles spot 7-6 (7-5), 6-3. Andrade rallied to defeat Pepper 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 in the number four singles match to earn the Penmen their second point of the match.

Here's what Le Moyne head coach Jeff Lonczak '03 had to say after the match:

"This was the best regular season win on the women's side in my career. We really set the tone in doubles. Great wins at first and second with Fran (Lilliegren) playing amazing. We finished up in singles with our seniors leading the way. Birdem (Oz) beat a former conference player of the year, Marta (Nunez) beat an all-time great at SNHU and Brooke (Fernandez) clinched by beating a Division-I transfer. A great team victory!"

The Le Moyne women's tennis team will travel to Williamsville, N.Y. to take on Daemen College on Wednesday, September 29 at 12:00 p.m. at Williamsville South High School
