DeWitt, N.Y. – The third-seeded Le Moyne College women's tennis team earned its sixth consecutive berth in the Northeast-10 Conference Championship semifinals with a 4-0 victory in the first round over sixth-seeded Saint Anselm College on Wednesday afternoon at Elevate Fitness.
With the victory, the Dolphins (9-4) advance to the NE10 semifinals for the sixth straight year (and sixth time in the program's history) and will face second-seeded Franklin Pierce University in Rindge, N.H. on Friday at 1:00 p.m.
"It's always great to host matches in our conference tournament," said head coach
Jeff Lonczak '03. "We really enjoyed the support of the department. On the court, we were able to overcome some nerves to prevail in doubles and handle business in singles. We're really looking forward to a rematch with Franklin Pierce for a berth in the finals."
Le Moyne collected the point in the doubles competition with victories at the second and third positions. Sophomore
Isabella Barona (Manta, Ecuador/Talentos de Manta) and junior
Fiona Pepper (Challapampa, Peru/Colegio Anglo Americano Prescott) ran their record to 6-1 with a 6-2 win at the second spot over Anastasia Kapothanasis and Matilda Briegel. Freshmen
Alicia Alvarez (Madrid, Spain/IES Ortega y Gasset) and
Paula Casares (A Coruna, Spain/Colegio Maristas Cristo Rey) clinched the point by downing Camila Heredia Osante and Abigail Svor at the third position, 6-4.
In the singles competition, Barona cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 victory at the second spot over Kapothanasis to put the Dolphins up 2-0. Casares extended her record to 12-0 with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Heredia Osante at the fourth position. Alvarez closed out the match with a 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 victory at the third spot over Olivia Parzick.
