Rindge, N.H. – Second-seeded Franklin Pierce University rallied for a 4-3 win over the third-seeded Le Moyne College women's tennis team in the Northeast-10 Conference Championship semifinals on Friday afternoon.
The Dolphins took a 1-0 lead in the match by winning the point in the doubles competition. Freshmen
Alicia Alvarez (Madrid, Spain/IES Ortega y Gasset) and
Paula Casares (A Coruna, Spain/Colegio Maristas Cristo Rey) improved to 12-1 on the season with a 6-2 win at the third position over Zoe Asterio Correa and Jillian Pagliuca to put the Dolphins up. Liria Loria and Ana Platisa evened doubles with a 7-5 victory at the first position over freshman
Stella Simeonova (Sofia, Bulgaria/National Gymnasium of Mathematics and Natural Sciences) and senior
Francesca Lilliegren (Guayaquil, Ecuador/Colegio Alemán Humboldt Guayaquil). Sophomore
Isabella Barona (Manta, Ecuador/Talentos de Manta) and junior
Fiona Pepper (Challapampa, Peru/Colegio Anglo Americano Prescott) clinched the point with a 7-6 win at the second spot over Maria Aguilo and Aynara Ferraz.
The Ravens won four of the six positions in the singles competition to rally to win the match. Aguilo evened the match at one point apiece with a 6-2, 6-0 win at the first spot over Simeonova. Platisa put the Ravens in front with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Alvarez at the third position. Casares knotted the score at two apiece as she improved to 13-0 on the year with a 7-6, 6-2 win over Asterio Correa at the fourth spot. Pepper gave the lead back to the Dolphins with back-to-back scores of 6-1 at the sixth position over Pagliuca. Ferraz tied the match at three wins apiece with consecutive scores of 6-4 over Lilliegren at the fifth spot. Loria clinched Franklin Pierce's third straight appearance in the NE10 Championship match by taking the third set against Barona at the second position after each recorded 7-6 wins in the first two sets.
Le Moyne (9-5), which appeared in the NE10 semifinals for the sixth straight year, opens its Spring schedule on Saturday, March 4 at the University of the District of Columbia.
