MEN'S SOCCER CLAIMS THREE POINTS IN NE10 WITH 1-0 WIN OVER SAINT ANSELM

Syracuse, N.Y. – After celebrating Senior Day on Ted Grant Field before their 2:00 p.m. kick off, the Le Moyne College men's soccer team pulled off a gutsy 1-0 victory over Saint Anselm College, to overtake the Hawks in the conference standings and keep their postseason hopes alive.

The Dolphins are now tied for 7th place in the NE10 standings alongside Bentley with 13 points.

"A great character win today for us. I think that the guys just believed that they could win. They did what we needed to do today. It wasn't pretty, but we got the three points and I'm really proud of the guys," said Le Moyne head coach Tom Bonus after the game.

Le Moyne got their go-ahead goal in the 24th minute when Jackson Card (McGraw, N.Y./McGraw) played a ball towards the top of the Saint Anselm penalty area from the right side of the field.

Tom Henne (Hamburg, Germany/Gymnasium Buckhorn) got a touch on the ball, but it kept moving towards Noah Sperduto (Elmira, N.Y./Elmira) who was standing at the top of the penalty area.

Sperduto headed the ball towards the edge of the six-yard box for Henne, who pursued the ball to the goal line and finished off Sperduto's pass with a header that got by Saint Anselm goalkeeper Brian Underhill and hit the back of the net to give the 'Phins an early 1-0 lead.

The dynamic of the match changed in the 28th minute when Le Moyne freshman forward and leading scorer Cameron Stuart (Fulton, N.Y./G. Ray Bodley) received his second yellow card of the match, forcing Le Moyne to play with 10 men on the field for the final 62 minutes and 14 seconds.

The match became 10 vs 10 in the 44th minute when a reckless challenge from Saint Anselm's Samuel Assantha earned him a straight red card.

Graduate goalkeeper Josh Mahr (Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) returned to Le Moyne's lineup on Senior Day, and in his last home game as a Dolphin Mahr delivered a great performance in net.

He recorded six saves, he wasted time when he could throughout the game, and towards the end he made an athletic swipe at the ball just as it was about to roll past his goal line for a Saint Anselm corner kick, successfully hitting it away towards the sideline for a Saint Anselm throw-in instead. Mahr recorded his fourth shutout of the season during the win.

Henne's goal on Saturday was his second in as many matches. The graduate midfielder has really come on as of late for the 'Phins, which is a big reason why they were able to make a push for the postseason.

Mahr, Henne, Brett Stern (Lockport, N.Y./Newfane/Duquesne), Jack Goodrich (Kelsall, England/King's School Chester) and Ben Quigley (Perth, Scotland/Community School of Auchterarder/University of Stirling) each played the full 90 minutes during the win.

The Le Moyne College men's soccer team will play their final game of the 2022 regular season on Tuesday at Assumption.
