Syracuse, N.Y. – The University of New Haven men's soccer team scored two goals in the final minute of Saturday's NE10 Conference battle against the Dolphins to register a dramatic 3-2 come-from-behind victory on Ted Grant Field.
The Chargers broke the 0-0 tie in the 42
nd minute when sophomore midfielder Adam Lindstrom scored from the middle of Le Moyne's penalty area off a nice pass from Alexander Gunnarsson.
The Dolphins came out in the second half with a sense of urgency, looking hard for the equalizing goal. Le Moyne evened the match at 1-1 in the 53
rd minute off some nice buildup in their attacking half of the field.
Left center back
Jack Goodrich (Kelsall, England/King's School Chester) sent a ball in the air down the left wing into the path of freshman forward
Cameron Stuart (Fulton, N.Y./G. Ray Bodley).
A trio of first touches then helped Le Moyne put the ball in the back of the net. With his first touch Stuart skillfully hit the ball off the bounce with his left foot to his right for
Max Buesch (Odenthal, Germany/Gymnasium Odenthal/Bethany Lutheran), who played a one-touch pass with his left foot into the penalty area in the path of
Tom Henne (Hamburg, Germany/Gymnasium Buckhorn) whose first touch was a shot with his left foot from just outside the six-yard box that got past New Haven goalkeeper Themis Kastoris and rolled past the goal line to give Henne his first goal of the season.
In the 64
th minute Buesch won the ball for Le Moyne near the right corner flag in their attacking third. Buesch made a move towards the right side of the 18-yard box, but was fouled just outside of the penalty area, earning a free kick for the Dolphins in a dangerous position of the field.
Goodrich hit the free kick with his left foot and curled the ball towards the far post with pace. Goodrich's shot hit the left post then flew into the back of the net to give the 'Phins a 2-1 lead less than 20 minutes after they faced a 1-0 halftime deficit.
With just under a minute left in the game, a New Haven player was fouled in the Le Moyne penalty area and Lindstrom scored the PK to tie the game at 2-2.
After Le Moyne kicked off the Chargers won possession back and began again towards the Le Moyne goal. The ball was sent into the box and Lindstrom put a shot on goal from the right side of the penalty area. His shot was saved by Le Moyne goalkeeper
Josh Mahr (Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) but Lucas Kaehr got to the rebound first and hit the ball into the left side of the net to put New Haven up 3-2 with five seconds left in the game.
The Le Moyne College men's soccer team has four NE10 Conference games remaining on their schedule, and they will compete next on Wednesday at home against non-conference opponent Daemen University.
