Syracuse, N.Y. – Redshirt sophomore forward
Haedyn Roberts (Holland Patent, N.Y./Holland Patent) scored 17 points to lead the Le Moyne College women's basketball team to a 60-47 victory over Post University on Sunday afternoon at Ted Grant Court.
"We're such a quote-unquote young team and games are won in the fourth quarter and last game we took it over and this game today we really stepped it up in the fourth quarter when we really needed it," said head coach
Mary Grimes. "That's a tough Post team and they were shooting lights out, getting on the boards and we had to fight. It was just a gritty, gritty win."
Roberts tallied 11 of her game-high point total in the second half, while pulling down seven rebounds. Freshman guard
Kaia Goode (Rochester, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) scored five points in each of the first and fourth quarters en route to a career-best 14 points. Redshirt freshman guard
Sydney Lusher (Oneida, N.Y./Oneida) recorded seven of her 12 points in the second quarter and finished the contest with seven assists. Senior guard
Lytoya Baker (Rochester, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) pulled down a career-high 13 rebounds, while adding seven points and five assists.
TiJanae Simmons led the Eagles in the setback with 16 points, 15 of which came from behind the three-point line.
After the Dolphins took a trio of three-point leads over the opening four and one-half minutes, the last of which came at 10-7, Post closed out the quarter with an 11-2 run to take an 18-12 lead after 10 minutes of action. Kiara Eubanks led four scorers in the jaunt with four points.
Tyara McQueen opened the second quarter with a three-pointer to give the Eagles their largest lead of the game at nine points.
The Dolphins took advantage of going to the foul line by going 6-for-6 to cut their deficit to 21-20 with 5:19 remaining in the half.
Simmons and Lauren Murphy wrapped three-pointers around baskets by McQueen and Baker to push Post's lead back to seven at 29-22 with 2:08 left.
Lusher hit a three-pointer and a jumper in the paint over the last 1:43 to get the Dolphins within 29-27 at halftime.
Le Moyne used a 14-3 run over the first six minutes of the third quarter to take a nine-point lead of its own. Roberts led the charge with seven points, while Lusher drilled a three-pointer off a feed from Roberts and Goode and classmate
Sierra Linnin (Valley Cottage, N.Y./Albertus Magnus) each scored in the paint for a 41-32 lead.
Post responded with nine straight points to even the score at 41 with 1:09 remaining in the quarter. Simmons buried a pair of three-pointers around a three-point play by Roxkel Washington.
Baker made a free throw with 48 seconds left in the quarter to give the Dolphins a 42-41 lead after 30 minutes of play.
After Simmons opened the fourth quarter with a three-pointer to put the Eagles back in front, the Dolphins rattled off 13 straight points to take control of the game. Goode scored in the paint off a backcourt steal, Lusher hit a jumper for the lead, Baker converted two foul shots, senior guard
Lexi Gruss (Binghamton, N.Y./Binghamton) and Roberts made lay-ups and then Gruss ended the outburst with a three-pointer from the left corner for a 55-44 lead with 5:15 remaining.
Following two free throws from each of Murphy and Roberts and one from Simmons, Goode closed out the game's scoring with a three-pointer.
Le Moyne (2-0), which improves to 14-2 at home under second-year head coach
Mary Grimes, heads on the road for the first time on Wednesday to take on Daemen University at 5:30 p.m.
