Syracuse, N.Y. – The Le Moyne College men's basketball team will play their first home game of the 2022-23 campaign on Wednesday when they host East-Region foe Saint Thomas Aquinas College for a 7:00 p.m. matchup on Ted Grant Court.
The Dolphins will be looking for their first victory of the season following two tough losses during the Saint Rose Tip-Off Tournament this past weekend.
The Dominican University Chargers came up with a buzzer-beating layup to claim a 68-66 win over Le Moyne in both team's season-opener on Saturday. During the second day of the Saint Rose Tip-Off Tournament, the Chargers fought back from an eight-point deficit against the Saint Rose Golden Knights with less than two minutes remaining and drilled a buzzer-beating three-point field goal to capture an 87-86 come-from-behind win and begin their season with two thrilling victories.
The Dolphins suffered an 84-73 setback against Bloomfield College during their second game of the season.
Junior forward
Luke Sutherland (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee/Siena/Bryant) provided a team-high 17 points, on 8-11 shooting from the field, to go along with a team-best six rebounds during 22 minutes of action off the bench during the loss to Bloomfield.
During the first game of the season against Dominican, it was 6'4" sophomore guard
Zy'Ever Wingfield (Richmond, Va./Henrico/Fork Union Military Academy) who led the 'Phins in scoring and rebounding with 18 points and eight boards during his first career start.
Graduate guard
Isaiah Salter (Charlotte, N.C./Central Cabarrus/American International/Adelphi) played 29 minutes off the bench and scored in double-figures during both games of the Saint Rose Tip-Off Tournament.
Salter contributed 12 points against Dominican, then 11 more against Bloomfield, hitting a combined five three-point field goals during the two non-conference contests.
Graduate guard
Nathan McClure (Houston, Texas/Concordia Lutheran/Texas State/State Fair C.C./IUPUI) has also converted a team-leading five three-pointers through Le Moyne's first two games. McClure has started and played over 30 minutes in both contests so far this season, his first with the Dolphins.
Graduate point guard
Mike DePersia (Cherry Hill,N.J./Haddonfield Memorial/IUPUI) has also started his first two games as a Dolphin, and currently leads the team in assists and steals.
DePersia tallied three rebounds, two assists and three steals against Dominican, then provided 14 points, including a team-best three three-point field goals, to go along with team-highs of four assists and four steals in 29 minutes played against the Bloomfield Bears.
The STAC Spartans are coming off a very successful season in 2021-22 during which they compiled a 28-5 overall record, captured an ECC Conference Championship, and won three games in the NCAA Championship East Regional before falling to Bentley University in the East Region Final.
Following the season, head coach Tobin Anderson was hired as the head coach of Farleigh Dickinson's men's basketball team. Saint Thomas Aquinas then announced in May the promotion of Associate Head Coach Matt Capell to the role of Spartans Head Men's Basketball Coach.
Saint Thomas Aquinas is off to a 2-0 start in 2022-23 with wins over Alliance University and Felician, which both came during the 2022 STAC Tip-Off Challenge.
Junior guard Jamal Barnes leads the Spartans in scoring with 17.0 points per game through two contests, while junior guard DeVante Jamison averaged 16.0 points, 6.0 assists and 4.0 rebounds in 30.0 minutes during the STAC Tip-Off Challenge.
During their 74-69 win against Felician, Jamsion provided the Spartans with 18 points, seven assists and five rebounds, while Barnes chipped in 15 points and five boards.
The most recent meeting between the two men's basketball programs came during the 2018-19 NCAA Championships East Region Quarterfinals.
The Spartans overcame a double-digit deficit to claim a 61-59 win over the Dolphins, who were led by head coach Patrick Beilein.
Prior to that, Saint Thomas Aquinas and Le Moyne met during the 2017-18 regular season, and the Spartans came away with a 72-67 win on their home floor.
