MEN’S BASKETBALL RECORDS 69-62 VICTORY AT ASSUMPTION

Worcester, Mass. – Sophomore guard Zy'Ever Wingfield (Richmond, Va./Henrico/Fork Union Military Academy) hit a go-ahead three-pointer as the Le Moyne College men's basketball team registered a 69-62 victory over Assumption University in Northeast-10 Conference action on Sunday afternoon at Laska Gymnasium.

Wingfield finished the game with 15 points, 11 of which he scored in the second half, and five rebounds in 25 minutes as a reserve. Senior forward Xavier Wilson (Spring Valley, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac/The Hotchkiss School/Central Connecticut State) tallied 14 points, including 11 in the second half, and six rebounds in 24 minutes off the bench. First-year graduate student guard Isaiah Salter (Charlotte, N.C./Central Cabarrus/American International/Adelphi) recorded 11 points, including nine in the first half, and six assists.

Isiah Gaiter led the Greyhounds in the loss with 16 points, including nine in the second half, and six rebounds. Cooper Creek and Kani Glover each had 10 points, while Creek added five rebounds and four blocks.

The teams went back and forth over the opening five minutes before Creek had a put-back lay-up and Glover drilled a three-pointer to put Assumption up 13-8.

Le Moyne, which won at Assumption for just the seventh time in 30 all-time meetings, used a 9-2 run to go in front, 19-17, with 8:58 left in the half. Wingfield scored twice in the paint, Wilson scored three points and redshirt sophomore guard Kevin Constant (Lawrence, Mass./Central Catholic/Tilton School) converted two foul shots.

The teams then alternated points over the ensuing three and one-half minutes as the score was tied three times and the lead changed sides three times, leading to a 27-26 Assumption lead with 5:36 to go.

The Dolphins tallied the final nine points of the stanza to take a 35-27 lead into the intermission. Following over two minutes of scoreless play, Salter put the Dolphins in front with a three-pointer. Constant then hit a pair of jumpers around a jump shot by Salter.

Assumption scored eight of the first 12 points of the second half to cut its deficit in half. Glover made a jumper and then Creek and Gaiter connected on three-pointers.

Le Moyne countered with the next six points for its first double-digit lead of the contest. Wilson and fourth-year junior forward Luke Sutherland (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee/Siena/Bryant) made lay-ups and then Wingfield had an electrifying dunk off a drive down the middle of the paint.

The Greyhounds responded with seven of the next nine points to pull back within five, led by five points from Creek, with 12:55 to play.

The Dolphins used a 7-2 spurt of their own to regain a 10-point edge with 8:38 remaining. Freshman guard Trent Mosquera (Brookline, Mass./Belmont Hill School) buried a three-pointer and then fed Wilson for a lay-up and Salter capped the stretch with a jumper in the paint.

Following a free throw by each team, Assumption rattled off 12 of the next 14 points to knot the score at 60 with 3:21 remaining. Cal Connelly ignited the run with a three-pointer, Gaiter made a lay-up, Glover followed two Le Moyne free throws with a jumper, Connelly hit another three-pointer and then Gaiter capped the run with a jumper in the paint.

Le Moyne tallied nine of the last 11 points of the game to secure the victory. Wingfield answered back 22 seconds later with a three-pointer to put the Dolphins up for good. Following three empty possessions by the Greyhounds around two by the Dolphins, Wilson put the Dolphins up by five with a jumper with 54 seconds left. Wingfield then made four free throws around a jumper by Gaiter to finish off the game's scoring.

Le Moyne (6-5, 5-1 NE10), which moved into a three-way tie at the top of the NE10 standings, returns home to host D'Youville University for the first time in the program's history on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
