West Haven, Conn. – Majur Majak recorded a double-double to lead the University of New Haven to a 69-50 victory over the Le Moyne College men's basketball team in a matchup of teams tied at the top of the conference standings on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action at Charger Gymnasium.
First-year graduate student guard
Isaiah Salter (Charlotte, N.C./Central Cabarrus/American International/Adelphi) led the Dolphins in the setback with 10 points, all of which came in the first half.
Majak tallied 12 points and 19 rebounds to lead the Chargers, who had all five starters score in double figures. Davontrey Thomas was the game's leading scorer with 14 points. Quashawn Lane finished with 13 points, seven assists and six rebounds. Tyrone Perry and Victor Olawoye each posted 12 points.
New Haven, which was selected to finish first in the NE10 standings in the preseason coaches poll, scored the first four points and 12 of the first 15 to force a Le Moyne timeout. Thomas started the scoring with two free throws and a lay-up around a lay-up by Lane, Tyrone Perry followed with a jumper and then Lane had a put-back lay-up with 15:00 to go.
The Dolphins answered with 12 of the next 18 points to close within three points with 9:29 to go. Salter hit his second three-pointer of the game and then fourth-year junior forward
Luke Sutherland (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee/Siena/Bryant) followed with one of his own. Salter then knocked down a jumper at the 12:06 mark to get the Dolphins within 15-11. Following a conventional three-point play by Victor Olawoye, junior guard
Darrick Jones Jr. (Richmond, Va. / Oak Hill Academy/Towson) and senior forward
Xavier Wilson (Spring Valley, N.Y. / Archbishop Stepinac/The Hotchkiss School/Central Connecticut State) each made one foul shot and then redshirt sophomore guard
Kevin Constant (Lawrence, Mass./Central Catholic/Tilton School) made a lay-up to make it 18-15.
The Chargers answered with an 8-2 run to take their largest lead of the half. Majak made two free throws and then Thomas made a pair of three-pointers around a lay-up by redshirt sophomore forward
Isaiah Elmore (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Catholic) for a 26-17 lead with 7:50 remaining.
Le Moyne countered with an 8-2 spurt of its own to pull the Dolphins within 28-25. Elmore converted another lay-up and then fourth-year junior guard
Jeremiah Washington (Chicago, Ill./Bogan/Ferris State) followed a Lane lay-up with back-to-back three-pointers to make it a three-point margin with 5:53 left in the half.
After the teams traded points over the next four and one-half minutes, resulting in a 33-30 New Haven lead, the Chargers scored the final four points of the stanza. Lane made a jumper and then Thomas hit a jumper with 17 seconds left.
Following two points from each team over the opening two minutes of the second half, the Chargers ran off 11 straight points to take their largest lead of the game. Lane started the streak with a lay-up, Olawoye made one of his own, Majak had a dunk and then Perry had a jumper to force a Le Moyne timeout with 15:03 left. Olawoye then buried a three-pointer for a 50-32 lead.
The Dolphins answered with a 13-4 run to pull within single digits with 5:28 remaining. First-year graduate student guard
Nate McClure (Houston, Texas / Concordia Lutheran/Texas State/State Fair C.C./IUPUI) started the run with a lay-up, Jones Jr. nailed a three-pointer from the left side, Sutherland made a lay-up and a jumper and then Wilson converted a pair of mid-range jumpers to get the Dolphins within 54-45.
Following a lay-up by each team, New Haven rattled off 13 of the last 16 points. Olawoye made a lay-up to ignite the run, Majak had a dunk, Lane drilled a three-pointer to surpass 1000 career points, Majak had another dunk and then Thomas and Perry scored in the paint around a Wilson lay-up.
Le Moyne (8-7, 5-2 NE10) returns home to take on Saint Michael's College on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m.
