MEN’S BASKETBALL HOLDS OFF AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL FOR 82-71 VICTORY

Springfield, Mass. – Five Dolphins scored in double figures as the Le Moyne College men's basketball team registered an 82-71 victory over American International College in Northeast-10 Conference action on Thursday night at Butova Gymnasium.

Redshirt freshman guard Christian Davis (Denver, Colo./Mullen/New Hampton School) led the Dolphins with 18 points, including 10 in the first half, and eight rebounds, while adding a pair of steals. Senior guard Nino Hernandez (Gardner, Mass./Winchendon School/Bryant) and redshirt freshman guard Kevin Constant (Lawrence, Mass./Catholic Central/Tilton School) each recorded 13 points. Junior forward Xavier Wilson (Spring Valley, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac/The Hotchkiss School/Central Connecticut State) scored in double figures for the eighth straight game with 11 points, while redshirt freshman forward Isaiah Elmore (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Catholic) netted a career-high 10 points.

American International also placed five players in double digits, led by 12 points from Donovan Miller, who also had five rebounds and four assists. Franklyn Batista and Shyheim Hicks each totaled 11 points, while Batista added eight rebounds and three steals. Xion Golding and Jalen Jordan each scored 10 points, with Golding posting eight rebounds and six assists.

The Dolphins opened the game with eight of the first 10 points before the Yellow Jackets scored six in a row to even the score for the first time just over four minutes into the game. Wilson and Elmore each had four points in the span.

After the teams trading points over the next three minutes, the Dolphins scored eight straight points to open up their first double-digit lead. Hernandez made a lay-up, Davis drilled a three-pointer and then third-year sophomore forward Luke Sutherland (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee/Siena/Bryant) drained a three-pointer for a 24-14 advantage with 9:43 left in the half.

American International answered with a 9-4 spurt to cut its deficit in half. Hicks buried back-to-back three-pointers from the left corner to cap the run.

The Dolphins countered with six straight points and 12 of the next 15 points to take their largest lead of the half. In the initial burst, Hernandez had a fast-break dunk off a steal and then Constant and Davis hit jumpers. Following another three-pointer by Hicks, Constant had a conventional three-point play and Davis knocked down a three-pointer.

AIC scored four of the last six points of the half to get within 42-30 at halftime.

After the teams traded points over the opening three and one-half minutes of the second half, the Yellow Jackets scored six straight points from three players to get within four with 13:44 left.

The teams continued the see-saw action over the next two minutes before Walter Covington nailed a three-pointer to get the Yellow Jackets within 52-49 with 11:11 remaining.

Le Moyne regained control with six points from four players to push its margin back to nine with just under nine minutes left.

AIC was able to get within five on four occasions over the next seven minutes, during which time Le Moyne's lead bounced between five and 10 points, before getting within four with 1:09 left on a pair of free throws by Miller.

The Yellow Jackets didn't score again, while the Dolphins closed out the game by going 7-for-8 from the foul line. Third-year sophomore guard Jeremiah Washington (Chicago, Ill./Bogan/Ferris State) made three free throws and then Davis and Constant each made two.

Le Moyne (10-12, 6-9 NE10) returns home to host Southern Connecticut State University on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. Prior to the game, Hernandez, guard Payton Hudson (Yonkers, N.Y./Our Saviour Lutheran/Iona/Independence C.C.) and forward Armon Nasseri (Youngstown, Ohio/Spire Academy/Mercyhurst/Roberts Wesleyan) will be honored by the Dolphin Athletic Association for their contributions to the program.
