Syracuse, N.Y. – The Le Moyne College women's tennis team opened its Spring season with a 7-0 setback to Colgate University on Saturday afternoon at the Drumlins Tennis Club.
Colgate won two of the three matches in the doubles competition to earn ed the point. Addie Eklund and Jordan Ben-Shmuel earned the first victory, 6-1, at the first position over
Birdem Oz (Istanbul, Turkey/TED Ankara College Foundation HS) and
Francesca Lilliegren (Guayaquil, Ecuador/Colegio Alemán Humboldt Guayaquil).
Marta Nunez (Rye, N.Y./Antonio Lopez (Spain)) and
Fiona Pepper (Challapampa, Peru/Colegio Anglo Americano Prescott) evened the competition at one apiece with a 6-4 win at the second spot over Emme Levenson and Rebecca Wolf. Katerina Atallah and Emily Untermeyer clinched the point for the Raiders by edging
Isabella Barona (Manta, Ecuador/Talentos de Manta) and
Brooke Fernandez (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd) at the third position, 7-6 (7-3).
The Raiders won five of the six matches in the singles competition in straight sets en route to the sweep. At the first position, Eklund recorded back-to-back scores of 6-0 against Barona. Levenson edged Oz at the second spot, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3. Ben-Shmuel slipped past Nunez, 7-6 (7-2), 7-5, at the third position. Wolf defeated Pepper at the fourth spot, 6-1, 6-3. In the only match to go to three sets, Atallah recorded a 6-1, 5-7, 10-6 win over Lilliegren at the fifth position. Untermeyer defeated Fernandez at the sixth spot, 6-2, 6-0.
Le Moyne (12-3) is back in action on Saturday against the University of the District of Columbia at 1:00 p.m.
