BASEBALL FALLS IN FINAL GAME OF WEEKEND TO MOLLOY

Myrtle Beach, S.C. – The Le Moyne College baseball team got shutout on Sunday morning and dropped the last game of their weekend trip to The Ripken Experience by a score of 3-0 to Molloy College.

"Although we are disappointed with the results of the weekend, our guys are doing a lot of things well. We have been good on the mound and have played pretty well defensively. We have struggled to drive in runs but it is not from a lack of hitting the ball hard. We'll find some holes moving forward and put some W's in the win column," said Le Moyne Head Coach Scott Cassidy '98 after the game.

Senior right-handed pitcher Jacob Maser (Chittenango, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy (Syracuse)) started on the mound for Le Moyne. Maser went 5.2 innings and allowed two runs while striking out five Molloy batters

Senior second baseman Drew Carroll (Clifton Park, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy (Albany) hit the ball hard right at the center fielder to lead off the top of the first, then graduate right fielder Michael Smith (Montebello, N.Y./Suffern) hit a one-out double down the left field line. Molloy starting pitcher Billy Wildeman got a strikeout and a ground ball to end the inning.
Sophomore left fielder Jason Boule (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy (Syracuse)) hit a ground ball two-out double down the third base line, then Drew Fureno (Canajoharie, N.Y./Fort Plain) worked a walk after falling into a 1-2 count, but Wildeman recorded a strikeout to end the inning.

Scavelli doubled in the right center field gap to lead off the bottom of the second inning for Molloy. A single through the left side advanced the lead runner to third base, and a ground ball to the right side brought Scavelli in to score and gave the Lions a 1-0 lead.

With two outs and nobody on base in the top of the 4th, senior shortstop Nick Nevins (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) drew a walk and stole second base to put himself in scoring position, but Wildeman recorded a strikeout to end the inning.

Molloy added another run during the bottom of the 5th inning to double their lead.

Smith reached base safely to lead off the top of the 6th for Le Moyne, and later in the inning with two outs Derrick Miller (Westernville, N.Y./Rome Free Academy/Hudson Valley C.C.) drew a walk to advance Smith into scoring position, then Nevins hit a rope to left field, but Peralta made a sliding catch to end the inning.

Willix replaced Wideman on the mound at the start of the 7th inning. Boule hit a ground ball through the left side of the infield to lead off the 7th, then Fureno hit the ball hard right back to the pitcher who threw the ball to first base for out number one. With a runner in scoring position, Carroll hit a line drive at the second baseman, who caught the ball to end the inning.

Molloy put runners on first and third base with one out in the bottom of the 7th. Brady hit a ground ball hard at Miller playing third. Miller did well to field the ball cleanly, then threw the ball to first for out number two. As Miller was setting himself to throw, the lead runner broke for home, and once Le Moyne first baseman Ty Syta (Hamburg, N.Y./St. Francis) caught the ball on the bag, he turned and fired a dart to Fureno behind the plate who applied the tag to complete the double play and end the inning.

The 'Phins went down 1-2-3 in the top of the 8th, then Molloy tacked on an insurance run during the bottom half of the inning. Boule made an incredible diving catch in deep left field to record the final out of the inning.

Miller drew a leadoff walk to start the bottom of the 9th, but a double play and a strikeout ended the game.

The Le Moyne College baseball team will be in action next on March 5, when they play a doubleheader at Shippensburg University.
