MEN’S TENNIS OPENS SPRING SEASON AND NE10 SLATE WITH 5-2 WIN OVER SAINT MICHAEL’S

Colchester, Vt. – The Le Moyne College men's tennis team opened its Spring season with a 5-2 victory over Saint Michael's College in Northeast-10 Conference action on Sunday at the Tarrant Recreation Center.

"It's always nice to start off the spring with a win," said head coach Jeff Lonczak '03. "A lot of credit goes to the Saint Michael's team and head coach Jason Hammel for a match well played. It was great to see Manuel Righi and Peter Hatton get their first wins as Dolphins. It'll be an altogether different type of challenge next weekend in Erie. We will need to raise our level to be successful. We're excited for the opportunity!"

The Dolphins opened the match by claiming the doubles competition with wins in two of the three matches. At the second position, graduate student Manuel Righi (Bologna, Italy/IPC Manfredi - ITC Tanari/Concordia (N.Y.)/Universita di Bologna) and freshman Peter Hatton (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt/Club Med Academics/Army West Point) earned their first win as Dolphins by defeating Josh Weiss and Sergio Barroso, 6-3. Fifth-year Tom Jarry (Paris, France/CNED Toulouse/Emmanuel) and junior Ethan Miller (Swindon, England/Cirencetser Kingshill School) clinched the point with a 6-3 win at the first spot over Jackson Moser and Michael Rosen. Jason Boucher and Constantin Krogh were 6-4 winners for the Purple Knights at the third position over juniors Kacper Piekarek (Wroclaw, Poland/Autorskrie Licea Artystyczne Akademickie/Missouri-Kansas City) and Felipe Cruz (San Jose, Costa Rica/Blue Valley School/Saint Louis).

Le Moyne won four of the six matches in the singles competition to secure its first conference victory of the season. In his singles debut as a Dolphin, Hatton was a 6-4, 6-2 winner at the third spot over Barroso. Righi, who made his return to the East region for the first time since the Fall 2014 semester, opened his Dolphin career by defeating Moser, 6-4, 7-5, at the second position. Miller recorded back-to-back 6-1 wins at the fifth spot over Rosen to clinch the match for the Dolphins. Cruz topped Seb Tonini at the sixth position, 6-1, 6-3, to put the Dolphins up 5-0. Boucher got the Purple Knights in the win column by rallying for a 2-6, 7-6 (8-6), 7-5 victory over Piekarek at the fourth spot. Weiss upset Jarry at the first position, 6-7 (3-7), 6-4, 6-3, to close out the match.

Le Moyne (2-1, 1-0 NE10), which has won 11 straight conference matches dating back to April 2019, is back in action on Friday against Mercyhurst University at 11:30 a.m. at the Westwood Racquet Club in Erie, Pennsylvania.
