SAINT ROSE WINS BOTH GAMES OF TUESDAY DOUBLEHEADER AGAINST SOFTBALL

Albany, N.Y. – The College of Saint Rose won both games of the Tuesday evening doubleheader against the Le Moyne College softball team on Cathy Haker Field in Albany.

The Dolphins lost a 1-0 pitchers' duel in game one of the doubleheader, then the Golden Knights scored 11 runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning during the second half of the doubleheader to claim a 12-2 victory in game two.

Redshirt-sophomore Laura Bennett (Corning, N.Y./Corning-Painted Post) allowed just one run and struck out nine batters during 6.0 innings of work in game one, but Saint Rose starting pitcher Isabella Milazzo allowed just three hits and went the distance to earn the complete-game shutout victory.

Morgan Tyrrell and Madison Chandler each recorded three hits for the Golden Knights in game two, and Chandler recorded a game-high three RBI to lead the Knights to a 10-run victory during the second half of the doubleheader.

With one out in the top of the 4th inning, Cassidy Barrett (Apalachin, N.Y./Vestal) stepped to the plate for Le Moyne. She swung at the first pitch she saw, and smoked a line drive into left field for a base hit. With a runner on first and nobody out, Milazzo got an infield popup and a strikeout to end the inning.

Saint Rose's Savanna Liverio-Tyler hit a one-out double off the center field wall in the bottom of the 4th inning, but Bennett recorded a strikeout, and then got a ground ball to the shortstop to end the inning and keep the game scoreless.

The Golden Knights broke through in the bottom of the 5th inning.

Alexandra Deeter got on base to lead off the inning for Saint Rose, then Bennett recorded a strikeout, and then Mattison Muller got on base following a fielder's choice play at second base.

With two outs in the inning, Muller stole second base, and then Ciana Phillips drove her in with a double into the left-center field gap that gave Saint Rose a 1-0 lead. Bennett threw a nasty 2-2 changeup to the next batter to record a strikeout and get out of the inning.

Brooke Nicolaos (Liverpool, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) came to the plate for Le Moyne with two outs in the top of the 6th inning, and the sophomore second baseman jumped on the first pitch and hit a rope into right-center field for a base hit.

Barrett followed it up with a hard ground ball to the right side of the infield, but the Saint Rose second baseman made the play and the throw to first in time for the final out of the inning.

Bennett shut down the Chargers with two more strikeouts in the bottom of the 6th, then the 'Phins gave themselves a chance to tie the game in the 7th when Alyssa Dybacz (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Charles W. Baker) led off the inning with a double off the center field fence.

Victoria Catalano (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) hit a slow ground ball to the short stop during the next at-bat which allowed Dybacz to advance to third base.

With one out and a runner on third, Mckenzie Bergdoll (Attleboro, Mass./Attleboro) dropped down a bunt towards the third base side, and Dybacz made a break for home. Emma Schaub came crashing in to field the ball and tossed it to Ellen Fuda behind the plate, who applied the tag on Dybacz before she could touch the plate to record the second out of the inning.

Milazzo recorded a strikeout to end the game and complete the 1-0 win.

During game two, Saint Rose took a 1-0 lead during the bottom of the 1st inning, and then Le Moyne tied the game in the top of the 2nd.

Elaina Kassap (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) singled to the shortstop to lead off the 2nd, then Dominique Russo (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) and Dominique Rinaldi (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) dropped down consecutive sacrifice bunts to move Kassap over to third base.

Makenzie Konik (Scotia, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) laid down an RBI bunt single to bring home Kassap and tie the game at 1-1.

Nicolaos led off the top of the 3rd inning for Le Moyne with a single through the right side of the infield, then Barrett ripped a single into center field to put runners on first and second with zero outs.

The cleanup hitter Dybacz stepped to the plate and provided an RBI single into center field to drive in Nicolaos and give the 'Phins a 2-1 lead.

Le Moyne's lead would be short lived, as the Golden Knights scored 11 runs during the bottom of the inning to open up a 10-run lead.

The Dolphins were unable to score during the 4th or 5th innings, and the game resulted in a 12-2 loss for Le Moyne.

The Le Moyne College softball team will return home for a Friday afternoon doubleheader against Assumption University at the Le Moyne College Softball Complex, with first pitch scheduled for 12:30 p.m. EST.
