Syracuse, N.Y. – Former Le Moyne College baseball standouts Josiah Gray and Ryan Murphy are set to begin their 2022 professional seasons.
Gray, who made his Major League debut with the Los Angeles Dodgers on July 20, 2021 before being traded to the Washington Nationals nine days later as the headliner in a package for Max Scherzer and Trea Turner, broke camp with the Nationals. He is the first Dolphin to make an Opening Day Major League roster since Andy Parrino in 2012 with the San Diego Padres. Gray is slated to make his season debut on Friday by starting on the mound against the New York Mets, who will start Scherzer on the mound.
At the Major League level in 2021, Gray went 2-2 with a 5.48 earned run average and 76 strikeouts over 70 and two-thirds innings split between the Dodgers and the Nationals. Prior to his promotion to the Dodgers, Gray made four appearances, including three starts, for the Triple-A Oklahoma City Dodgers, where he went 1-1 with a 2.87 earned run average and 22 strikeouts over 15 and two-thirds innings.
Murphy, who was drafted by the San Francisco Giants in the fifth round of the 2020 MLB First-Year Player Draft, will begin the 2022 minor league season on the sideline while dealing with a back issue. According to reports, Murphy was slated to open the season with the Double-A Richmond Flying Squirrels. He is the 10th-ranked prospect in the Giants organization by Baseball America and is ranked 12th by MLB Pipeline.
With the 2020 minor league season canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Murphy had to wait until the 2021 season to make his professional debut. He went 6-4 with a 2.52 earned run average and 164 strikeouts over 107 and one-third innings split between the A-level San Jose Giants and the Advanced-A Eugene Emeralds. For his efforts on the mound, Murphy was selected as the Giants' Minor League Prospect Pitcher of the Year by MLB Pipeline.
