Syracuse, N.Y. – The Le Moyne College baseball team won both games of their doubleheader on Friday afternoon against the Pace University Setters to solidify their place in the Northeast-10 Conference Championships.
The first victory of the day, a 2-1 triumph over the Setters, clinched a postseason berth for the 'Phins. Le Moyne won game two by a score of 20-8, which earned them third place in the Southwest Division standings after Saint Rose lost both games of their doubleheader today at Adelphi.
"After a great pitching performance in game one the bats exploded in game two. We did a lot of things well today on a day where we celebrated our seniors. Now we can take that momentum into the playoff," said
Le Moyne Head Coach Scott Cassidy '98 following the win.
Le Moyne celebrated Senior Day on Friday, recognizing 10 student-athletes who were set to play their last regular season contests as Dolphins. Included in that group was graduate left-hander
Joe Vail (Cromwell, Conn./Xavier), who started game one of the doubleheader and allowed just five hits and one run in 5.0 innings of work to earn the win.
Matt Tarby (Liverpool, N.Y./Bishop Grimes) pitched 1.1 scoreless innings in relief during the seven-inning contest, then
Jed Boyle (Syracuse, N.Y./Corcoran) got the final two outs to earn the save.
Drew Carroll (Clifton Park, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy (Albany)) and
Zach Brush (New York Mills, N.Y./Utica Notre Dame) each recorded an RBI during the 2-1 win.
Nick Nevins (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham),
Drew Carroll,
Michael Smith (Montebello, N.Y./Suffern) and
Richie Kuhar (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) each hit a home run during the second half of the doubleheader as the Dolphins ran away with a 20-8 victory.
Nevins launched a grand slam during Le Moyne's six-run bottom of the 1
st inning in game two, and finished the contest with five runs batted in. Smith also recorded five RBIs during the 20-8 win and recorded his second multi-homerun game of the season by launching a two-run homerun in the 5
th and a three-run homerun in the 8
th.
Jacob Maser (Chittenango, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy (Syracuse)) struck out nine batters in 5.0 innings of work during game two to improve his record to 4-1 on the season.
Dean DePreta launched a solo home run during game one to provide Pace's sole RBI, then DePreta hit two homeruns during game two and finished the contest with six RBIs.
Carroll went 3-3 at the plate during game two with a walk, a hit by pitch, four runs scored, two runs batted in, a homerun and a stolen base. Brush went 3-5 with an RBI, three runs scored and a walk.
Le Moyne got both of their runs during game one in the bottom of the 4
th inning. Brush ripped a single through the right side with one out in the inning to drive in Nevins and break the 0-0 tie.
With the bases loaded and still one out in the inning following Brush's base hit, Carroll lifted a fly ball to deep center field which allowed
Nick Hansen (Troy, N.Y./La Salle Institute/Hudson Valley C.C.) to tag up and score from third to put the 'Phins up 2-1.
DePreta hit his solo homerun to lead off the 6
th inning, then Cassidy brought in Tarby from the bullpen.
Tarby got a strikeout for the first out of the inning, then Pace's Nicholas Montagna hit a ground ball to the right of first baseman
Ty Syta (Hamburg, N.Y./St. Francis) that was just out of the senior's reach. Before the ball could roll into right field for a base hit, Carroll showed tremendous range by getting to the ball, sliding to keep it in the infield, fielding it cleanly and making the throw to Tarby who scrambled over to cover first base for the second out of the inning. Tarby got a ground ball for the final out of the inning.
Le Moyne loaded the bases in the bottom of the 6
th, but Pace relief pitcher Dan Brown got a fly ball to end the inning.
Le Moyne entered the top of the 7
th holding onto a 2-1 lead, knowing they needed one win during the doubleheader to clinch a playoff spot.
Tarby hit a batter to lead off the inning, then Pace dropped down a sacrifice bunt to move the lead runner into scoring position.
At that point Cassidy brought in Boyle, who earned the save during Le Moyne's 3-2 win over Pace on Thursday.
Boyle got a ground ball out, which moved the tying run over to third. Pace's three-hitter, Luke Jacobi stepped to the plate next in what would be the most tense-filled at-bat of the afternoon. On the last pitch of the at bat, Jacobi hit a ground ball to the right of Nevins at short. Nevins ranged to his right, fielded the ball cleanly on a tough hop and made the throw on time to first base for the final out of the game, securing the win and a playoff spot for the 'Phins.
Nevins then hit a grand-slam homerun during the bottom of the 1
st inning of game two as Le Moyne took a 6-3 lead.
The Dolphins scored two more runs in the bottom of the 2
nd, then five more in the bottom of the 5
th to open up a 14-5 lead.
Le Moyne put up another five runs in the bottom of the 8
th, including back-to-back homeruns from Smith and Kuhar.
