MEN’S BASKETBALL HAS HOME WIN STREAK SNAPPED BY SOUTHERN NEW HAMPSHIRE, 60-53

Syracuse, N.Y. – Ethan Okwuosa registered 19 points to lead Southern New Hampshire University to its sixth straight win, 60-53, over the Le Moyne College men's basketball team in Northeast-10 Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Ted Grant Court.

Junior guard Darrick Jones Jr. (Richmond, Va./Oak Hill Academy/Towson) was the only Dolphin to score in double figures with a career-high 11 points, eight of which came in the second half.

Okwuosa tallied 12 of his points in the second half, while adding three steals in the contest. Matt Becht, the top three-point shooter in the conference at 51.5 percent, connected on both of his three-point attempts en route to 12 second half points. Evan Guillory also finished with 12 points, nine of which came in the first half.

Southern New Hampshire jumped out to a 14-2 lead through the opening 8:40 of the game. Five Penmen scored in the span, led by four points each from Guillory and Sam Kodi.

After the teams traded points over the next two and one-half minutes, the Dolphins used an 8-2 run to close within four with 5:25 to go in the first half. First-year graduate student guard Isaiah Salter (Charlotte, N.C./Central Cabarrus/American International/Adelphi) accounted for four of the eight points.

The teams then alternated 5-0 runs before each making two free throws in the final 37 seconds of the half to send the Penmen into the intermission with a 27-23 lead.

Southern New Hampshire scored the first five points of the second half and eight of the opening 10 to take a double-digit lead with 16:36 remaining as Becht drained a pair of three-pointers around a jumper by Okwuosa.

After Jordan Brathwaite drilled a three-pointer to put the Penmen up 40-30 with 13:52 left, the Dolphins rattled off 10 straight points to knot the score for the second and final time. Jones Jr. made two free throws, fourth-year junior guard Jeremiah Washington (Chicago, Ill./Bogan/Ferris State) and senior forward Xavier Wilson (Spring Valley, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac/The Hotchkiss School/Central Connecticut State) buried three-pointers and then redshirt sophomore guard Kevin Constant (Lawrence, Mass./Central Catholic/Tilton School) made a jumper in the paint to tie the score with 11:42 to play.

The Penmen responded with eight straight points over three and one-half minutes to regain control of the game. Okwuosa scored the first six points on drives into the paint and then Becht converted a jumper in the paint to force a Le Moyne timeout with 8:19 left.

Following three free throws over three possessions by the Penmen, Jones drilled a three-pointer from the right wing to snap a Le Moyne drought of over seven and one-half minutes without a field goal to get the Dolphins within six with 4:06 left.

First-year graduate student guard Nate McClure (Houston, Texas/Concordia Lutheran/Texas State/State Fair C.C./IUPUI) followed a Guillory free throw with a three-pointer with 2:13 remaining to get the Dolphins within 52-49, but the Penmen scored the next four points and never led by less than five the remainder of the game as they went 6-of-8 from the foul line over the final 66 seconds.

Le Moyne (9-9, 6-4 NE10), which had its five-game home win streak snapped, returns to the hardwood on Wednesday at Southern Connecticut State University at 7:30 p.m.
