Brookville, N.Y. – The Le Moyne College men's soccer team and the LIU Sharks battled through heavy rain on Sunday afternoon at LIU Soccer Park, and the Sharks came away with a 6-3 victory in Northeast Conference action.
The two teams scored a combined seven goals during the first 45 minutes, as LIU held a 4-3 lead at halftime.
Three goals were scored in the first three minutes of the game.
The Sharks struck first just one minute and 14 seconds into the match when Emil Jaaskelainen converted a penalty kick following a handball in the Le Moyne penalty area.
The Dolphins quickly tied the game less than a minute later when redshirt-sophomore forward
Jakob Priestman (Leek, England/Westwood/Missouri State) sent a pass into the left side of the LIU penalty area for freshman forward
Felix Ludemann (Wrestedt, Germany/Herzog-Ernst-Gymnasium Uelzen), who skipped a cross into the six-yard box where the ball deflected off an LIU defender and hit the back of the net.
The Sharks jumped back in front just 55 seconds later when Jaaskelainen hit a loose ball in the Le Moyne 18-yard box into the bottom right corner of the goal.
The Dolphins tied the game at 2-2 in the 11
th minute when a give-and-go between Ludemann and redshirt-junior defender
Jack Goodrich (Kelsall, England/King's School Chester) sent Goodrich on a run into the left side of the LIU penalty area. Goodrich smashed a left-footed shot towards the near post that hit the goalkeeper's gloves then crossed the goal line to once again tie the match.
Jaaskelainen completed a hat trick in the 25
th minute when he got on the end of a cross from Alan Martinez and knocked it out of the air into the left side of the goal from inside the six-yard box to give LIU a 3-2 lead.
Jaaskelainen, the 2022 NEC Player of the Year and a two-time First Team All-NEC honoree, recorded his fourth goal of the contest in the 35
th minute with the help of an assist from Joshua Saavedra.
Le Moyne trimmed its deficit to 4-3 in the 39
th minute when Goodrich set up sophomore midfielder
Cameron Stuart (Fulton, N.Y./G. Ray Bodley) for his second goal of the season.
Goodrich tallied three points in a single match for the second time this season, and he leads the Dolphins in points with four goals and five assists.
With a goal and an assist, Ludemann registered three points in a single game for the first time in his collegiate career.
The Sharks outscored the Dolphins 2-0 during the second half to pull away and earn three points in the conference standings.
Saavedra scored his fifth goal of the season in the 69
th minute, and Saidou Diallo extended LIU's lead to 6-3 in the 76
th minute.
The Dolphins outshot the Sharks during the 90 minutes by a tally of 13-12. Both teams took five corner kicks during the match.
Following other results around the league on Sunday, the Dolphins clinched a spot in the 2023 NEC Tournament. With eight points and a 2-3-2 record against NEC competition, the Dolphins are tied for fifth place in the conference standings.
Le Moyne will play its final regular season game on Thursday at home against Sacred Heart at 3:00 p.m. The team will celebrate Senior Day on Thursday, and will hold a special ceremony on Ted Grant Field prior to kickoff.
